Very Fast Home Pregnacy Test Results Concerns/doubt Posted: 03-28-06 12:53pm
How soon can the best home pregnacy tests
on the market detect pregnacy? Can they
detect before a missed period?
Here's the scenario, a lady friend and I
engaged in intercourse several times
during the weekend of march 4 - 6.
Exactly two weeks from the 6th she called
me on march 20 saying that she took a home
test and it's positive (pregnant result).
So, the first question out of my mouth
was, "what made you take a test? Did you
miss your period?" she says, "no, I just
felt like something was wrong. I've been
pregnant before and I know what it feels
like."
so, after having it confirmed by a doctor
this past week monday, march 27, I learned
that her last period occurred on feb 24.
From my information, since she has a
regular cycle, her ovulation date should
have been around march 10 - 11. This
means that any sperm that would have
slipped by would have had to hang around
inside of her from the 5/6 to the 10/11.
That's 4/5 days. On top of that, although
we were irresponsible and didn't use an
protection, I still didn't release any
sperm (ejaculate) inside of her unless
there was some slip up along the way. And
of course she's saying that it's only been
me.
My question is, (1) if it is me she's
pregnant by, could any home pregnacy test
detect pregnacy that soon and before the
next scheduled period was missed. (2)
does it seem likely that she be pregnant
by me?
Whomever is qualified to answer, please
tell me your credentials. Thanks.

Pregnancy tests are good up to 5 days
before your missed period.
Did you go to the doctor with her? How
far along did the doctor say she
is? It seems unlikely to me that she
would know she was pregnant within 2
weeks. You may want to investigate her
claims further.
Good luck.

I did go with her to her general
practioner. Not an ob-gyn. I didn't
think to ask how far along she was at that
time, either. The doctor basically asked
when her last period was and calculated
everything based on what my lady friend
verbally told her.
So, I also didn't want to offend the young
lady just yet either by questioning
whether she was possibly already
pregnant.
Why do you say it seems unlikely? What
are basing that on? I'm hoping you are a
doctor or nurse. Either way, I appreciate
your response.

I am neither a doctor or a nurse, I am a
woman who has been pregnant multiple
times.
Usually the first indication of pregnancy
is a missed period and the majority of
women do not have any symptoms until then.
What did the doctor do? Generally your
first appointment is extensive and filled
with urine tests, blood tests, and a check
of the size of the uterus.
I could be totally wrong - but you should
make sure this is your child. (i'm
assuming she is keeping it and wants you
to take care of her)

Every woman ovulates at a different time.
The average and most common time is 14
days after the first day of her last
period. If she ovulates on day 14, that
would make her fertile from around march 5
to march 10th. That's a big if. She
most definitely could be pregnant and most
definitely could have got a positive on a
home pregnancy test before her period was
due. I know about day 6 or 7 after
ovulation if i'm pregnant. Some women
can tell.
However...If you did not ejaculate inside
of her, it significantly reduces the
chance of you making her pregnant. It
still is possible, though. I'd suggest
supporting her now and getting a paternity
test after the baby comes.
Oh, and as far as my credentials, i've
been pregnant 3 times and have done much
research on pregnancy. I am not
officially certified in anything to do
with health, though.

I've been pregnant 4 times and have 3
children. I host a birth club and a
worry board on .Baby.Center.
Anyway, if you know the date of the 1st
day of her last period, count 12-14 days
including that day. She would most
likely ovulate on day 12, 13 or 14. She
could get pregnant from anywhere between
days 11-through-18. Sperm can live on
average 48 hours but some persistant
little buggers can live up to 5 days.
.E.T.A that while new pg tests .C.A.N
detect hcg 4 or 5 days before a period
should start, they don't always. In my
experience, .I've never had a pg test show
positive before my period was due. On my
last pg it never showed up on a test even
days afterwards, .I had to get a blood
test.

sorry, but I have to disagree a little.
If she ovulates on day 12, then she could
get pregnant before day 11, possibly as
early as day 8.

All this leads me to continue insisting
this man find out if there is a
possibility she was already pregnant -
because, to me, it seems very convenient.

Hun, you have to note that we aren't
doctors we are wemon who are and who have
been preggers. We will give you advice
and whatever knowledge on the subject that
we may have.
All wemon ovulate differently....Average
wemon ovulate like 12-14 days after their
periods. Some within a few days of their
period. I ovulated around 3-6 days after
my period. I know this because my
husband went to sea the 2 days after my
period ended. And we....Well I won't get
into that.
You need to understand that the
irresponcibility of engaging in
unprotected sex may end up in pregnancy.
If you have doubts then a paternaty test
will be your best bet. That baby may
very well be yours unless she entertains a
lot of gentlemen during that time.
Btw I found out I was preggers 2 days
before missed period.

of course, she wants to keep it and of
course she's expecting me to take care of
the child. And of course, I don't want to
keep it. Why? She has one child (not by
me) already, a part-time college student,
still lives at home with her mother, and
we've only known each for a couple of
months. However, she using religious
beliefs as her reason for wanting to keep
the child although we talked about sex
often before it actually happened.

Good luck to you! Please keep up informed
about what happens.
You need to date the pregnancy. Maybe an
ultrasound?

.No matter her reasons for wanting to keep
the baby, you really won't have a say in
the final decision. I realize that it
seems "religious reasons" weren't enough
to keep her from sleeping with you in the
first place, but that's no reason to
dismiss her using religion as a reason to
keep the baby. There could be every
reason in the world to not keep the baby.
The fact is that she doesn't need a
reason to keep it other than "she wants
the baby." sorry, that's life and how the
law works.
What you need to do now is get an accurate
due date from her. It should be right
on the ultrasound photo. Then you can
try to calculate if the timeline matches
up but chances are high that you'll need a
paternity test when the baby is born.
If she needs an amniocentesis for medical
reasons, she could have the paternity test
done from that at the same time.

What did they tell her her due date was?
I know how to calculate a due date and
you can estimate how far along she is from
that. Obgyns use that wheel thing and
estimate it from the date of a womans last
period.
Here I got this off a website
""the approximate date may be obtained by
taking the date when your last period
began, adding 7 days, then counting back 3
months and add a whole year. For
example, if the first day of your last
period was september 9, 2000; add 7 days
and you get september 16,2000; then count
back 3 months and you have june 16: the
estimated due date is june 16, 2001""
so if her last period was feb 24th her due
date would be december 1st. So right
now she'd be 4 weeks along. I dont seem
like it adds up. But this is just
estimated totally by the date of her last
period. Your best bit is when they do
the ultrasound they can tell you more
accuratly how far along she is. And
i'd defantly get a dna test done if I were
you.

Just a quick question....Are you rich and
she mistaked you for a fool? If this
baby isn't yours you don't have to father
it. However if it is your's then you
need to take the responcibility and take
care of the baby.
Don't pressure her into an abortion, just
wait for a paternaty test and go from
there. You call her a young lady, are
you much older than she?
I have a pregnancy wheel that gives the
dates of conception based on the day of
her last period. (if you go to the obgyn
the dr or nurse would use this wheel to
determine her due date, then the
ultrasound will be more accurate with the
measurements of the baby.)
if her period was on feb 24th then
according to the wheel her conception date
would have been on or around march 10th.
I know that the dr used this wheel on my
pregnancy, and with my sister, and
friends, but then the ultrasound is more
accurate. You may need to wait for the
ultrasound, and paternity test.

Sounds to me like she was already
pregnant.
I've been pregnant 3 times. Each time I
was sure I was pregnant and started
testing really early. I've never *ever*
gotten a positive result 2 weeks after
having sex. *e.V.E.R* it's always taken
about 4 weeks to get any test to read
positive.
Her saying she "just knew" something was
weird seems odd, as it would probably be
even too soon for her to feel any
symptoms.
I'd find out when the doctor thinks she
conceived and go from there.

Yep, I agree with the others. Make sure
you take a paternity test when the child
is born.

that's actually not true. A lot of women
feel symptoms as early as 5 days after
conceiving (5 days after having sex). It
is uncommon to get a positive pregnancy
test earlier than 10 days after conception
(10 days after "having sex"), but it has
happened. It's very common to get a
positive test result 2 weeks after
conception.

Yes, I haven't any doubt that pregnancy
tests can work as soon as 5 days
before your missed period. But I would
think that would be if you ovulated early
and implantation was quick.
In the real world, this isn't necessarily
true. It seems suspicious because he
didn't ejaculate inside her (yes I know
pregnancy is still possible, but less
likely) and that she took a pregnancy test
2 weeks after intercourse. So 3.5 weeks
after her period she knew she was
pregnant? Fishy.

i think we're going by our knowledge and
personal experiences here. All three
times I was pregnant I knew 3.5 weeks
after my period. I had symptoms and had
major symptoms with my last (which ended
up being a twin pregnancy) along with
implantation bleeding well before two
weeks post conception. I know a lot of
women get no symptoms, but a lot of women
do get symptoms. Also, a lot of women are
serial pregnancy test takers and take one
at the first inkling (or even every month)
or pregnancy.
