How Are You Coping With Finances And the Baby?

This has been one of the biggest
challenges for me. I am not really old
enough to work anywhere that pays very
well and am finding it difficult to
provide for myself and my child.
My daughter is 18 months old, I began
working as soon as I found out I was
pregnant. I work 3 part-time jobs (about
50 hours/week, 2 fast food and one with my
dad when I have time), I go to a chartered
high school so I can fit in time for
school work when necessary. I am
currently living in a basement apartment
at my parents house. I give 60% of what I
earn to my parents for rent, food, and
child care. I keep 30% and put it into a
savings account so I can move out and
start a life once I turn 18 (provided I
save enough first, of course) and put 10%
away for adelaide because I would like her
to go to university one day.
This summer I will be 16 and would like to
quit my jobs in fast food and get work as
a painter at college pro because I will be
able to work full time and it pays much
better than the work I am doing now.
I am planning to open my own business in
the summer because it is the only way I
feel like I will be able to earn enough to
make any sort of decent living. I don't
beleive I will be able to go to university
for a long time after I graduate. When I
finish high school my daughter will only
be 4 years old and I can't imagine that I
will be able to save enough to pay for
school and child care before that time.
This is a problem because I know it is
difficult to find a good job without a
university education, especially if you
are taking care of kid.
So how are the rest of you coping... Or
planning to cope with this type of thing?

Your own business at 16? You're a little
over-ambitious, don't you think? Those
take a lot of work, time and money
to get started.

Lots of ppl have their own mini businesses
in canada---the gov't provides money for
teens during the summer to do this--stuff
like painting, lawn care...Simpler stuff
like that---
but I can't tell ya how my finances are
going, haven't had my baby yet. I'm only
just over 2mnths....

just about anything does. You can get a
student grant from the government. They
give about $3000 for summer businesses. I
have already submitted my business plan
and should hear back before summer starts.

Shiny. We get £30 a week for turning up
to sixth form every day. I'm getting
nothing right now. Xd
my family has its own business (cobbling)
that i'm going to inherit, and I know how
much money is poured into it. Therefore
i'm a little wary of anyone who bangs on
about starting their own business. :p

i can imagine that cobbling would be a
very expensive business to run. There are
quite a lot of summer business (and real
business) that can be started with very
small capital... Some almost none at all.

you from? Me and my fiancee are buying a
house and its gonna need lots of painting
lol and i'm not supposed to paint b/c of
the baby.

Well, at least you have ambition, and
you're not just sititng around soaking up
your parents' money. Are you getting
child support if you're not with your
daughter's father? If not, how much are
you getting paid a week with your three
jobs?

Wow! U sound like ur doing really good
for 16!
I'm in college right now and I dont work..
So we're on one income right now (my bf
works at inco tho so its pretty good) and
im pregnant with my second child.
Expenses arent so bad except we figured
out thagt daycare will cost us about
11,000 next year! Nuts huh? Other tahn
that its okay.. But I will be working
full time in the summer.. And im done
college in 2 years so it will be tight for
a bit but it can be done :)

its possible I ran my dads buisness at 14
and im getting jobs most people my age
dont get and im 22 now anything is
possible

I have to say that you sound really
responcible, and I am glad to hear of a
young person who is being accountable.
I am 24 and my husband and I are having
our first baby. We are very happy about
it, however my husband is flaking on me
and I am not sure if he is going to be
around once she is born and I don't know
if he will support her. But the thing
is, I can support myself and my little
skoot without him. I don't have any
schooling or anything, I just got lucky
enough to find a job at 16 and stuck with
it and at 24 I have move up in the company
and make a good amount of money.
