Over 40 Went to Fertility Clinic.....help! Posted: 03-29-06 14:48pm
I am 40 (i'll be 41 next month) and have a
16 year old daughter from a previous
marraige. My new husband and I have been
together for 8 years (he is also 8 years
younger) and we just started trying to
conceive a year ago when I was 39. After
6 months of trying, I was put on 50 mg.
Of clomid for three months and got
pregnant the 3rd month in dec. 05. I
had a miscarraige at 8 weeks (but embryo
was stopped growing at 6 1/2 wks). Went
to fertility specialist as now i'm
approaching 41 and was told I have 10
follicles (6 on rt ovary and 4 on lft).
My fsh level was 18. After all I have
read on the internet, based on my fsh
level I am doomed. By the way, my
husband has excellent sperm count, I have
never had endometriosis, cysts, tubal
blockages, scarring, nothing and am in
excellent health, weight is 112 , i'm 5'3,
I work out, eat right, take vitamins, etc.
My question is, I keep reading that even
though fsh is typically 'the indicator' of
whether one can conceive, I also keep
hearing about number of follicles, but I
can't seem to find out what that number
is. For my age, is 10 a good number, a
low number, or does it even matter? Can
someone please help me out! I start my
100 mg. Of clomid tonight for the clomid
challenge test I am taking next monday.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!!

Welcome to the boards. I don't know
anything about fertility testing but I
know it can be a long and expensive
process with no guarentees. My sister
has been trying to get pregnant for the
past fifteen years and has spent a small
fortune on fertility treatments, testing
and even invitro fertilization. When the
invitro failed she pretty much gave up on
ever having a baby of her own. That was
about four years ago.
But god intervened. Her step son
(husband's son from previous marriage)
fathered a little boy about a year ago.
The mother of the boy doesn't really have
the ability to care for the boy so she
gave my sister custody. The girl
already had a little girl and my sister
offered to take her too, she agreed.
So although my sister did not give birth
to them, she is now raising the two
sweetest, most adorable little ones, the
little girl is just over two and my nephew
just turned one a couple of months ago.
My sister's had custody for the past seven
months.
So god does work miracles, even if they
aren't quite what you were hoping or
expecting!
Maybe you will get more information on the
medical part of your question over on the
fertility or over forty forum.
