Intense Pain Upper Left Side
Posted: 03-30-06 10:57am

Two weeks ago, my I took my husband to the emergency room because he had very intense pain on his upper left side. The doc diagnosed it as kidney stones, gave him some pain medicine, and sent us on our way, with the instructions that if the pain didn't lessen in two days, to come back. Well, two days later we were back. To this point, he has had x-rays, blood tests and an ivp. The urine test did show some blood in his urine, but his urine tests have always shown blood in the urine. The blood tests ruled out pancriatitis; the ivp ruled out kidney stones. We go back to the urologist on monday, to see what the next step is, but i'm worried about what could possibly be causing this and am looking for some possible explanations. The pain is not always severe, but is mostly always present.

About five years ago, he had almost identical symptoms and had basically the same tests ran, with the addition of having scopes used. The doctors did not find anything wrong at that point and eventually the pain ceased.

Anyone have any ideas on this?

Intense Pain on Upper Left Side

I am having his problem now and have had it off and on for some time. My doctor believes that it is muscle related and stress induced. He suggested two things that are very helpful for me. Every evening after work he suggested that I drink about 4 ounces of Port wine. (Taylor port is a reliable brand and is about $9.00 per bottle) This helps stop spasms in the sharp turn of the intestine which is on the left side of the body. He also said that muscle spasms in that area of the body are often caused by an absence of magnesium in the body. He recommended that I buy a product called CalAbsorb (it has c, d, magnesium and manganese) and is in a powdered form so it is delivered to the body very quickly. I take mine just before bed and sleep like a baby. I hope these suggestions are helpful to your husband.

Does your doctor monitor your blood levels for magnesium?
Too much magnesium is dangerous for people with kidney problems/disease also people with intestinal problems need to use this with caution.

Blood in the urine is not normal and should be evaluated to find the underlying cause.
Some people get spasms which are known as renal colic this occurs more when a person has a kidney stone but it does happen without the presence of a stone.
