It seems that your gynecologist recommended birth control pills so that the hormones found in the pills might help normalize your menstrual cycles. Birth control pills can normalize irregular cycles but no ovulation will occur during use of the pills. There is no chance that you and your boyfriend can conceive while using birth control pills because there is no ovulation (no production of ova, eggs). It seems best to address the reason why your cycles are irregular. One possibility is that aren't ovulating naturally. Menstrual cycles for women who do not ovulate are usually irregular. Birth control pills can bring regularity to the menstrual cycle but cannot induce ovulation. You can request a hormonal analyses from your gynecologist (FSH, LH, estrogen, progesterone, prolactin, testosterone, DHEA, thyroxin) to identify if your current experience of sterility is actually caused by a hormonal disturbance in the axis hypothalamus-pituitary gland-ovaries, or not.
