When I was pregnant I ate crablegs and all
that good stuff....But at the end of my
pregnany my aunt told me that eatting fish
with hard shells isnt good during
pregnancy because they have
idodine(spelling?) in them...But that
pretty much all I know about the whole
eatting fish thing..But like I said I ate
them throughout my pregnancy..Because I
craved them all the time ..And my son was
perfectly normal...But not saying
everyone's the same..

You're not supposed to eat high amount of
seafood while preg because they often
build up mercury in them, which obviously
isn't good for the baby. They also build
up other toxins such a iodine, due to
biomagnification and bioaccumulation in
the food chain

i agree with this statement, fish that has
high mercury content are tuna (if you
really fancy this, the allowed intake
would be once a week), swordfish etc.
However pregos are advised to take fish
with high omega 3 level content such as
salmon and sardines (not that I could eat
them). With shrimps, crabs etc...You just
have to eat them in moderation and well
cooked (so avoid sushi and japanese).
With cheese you're not supposed to eat the
blue stripey thingys such as stilton etc.
Coz they have a high risk to listeria (its
one of the bacterias that causes food
poisoning)

What I Was Told... Posted: 04-05-06 12:30pm
Hello,
i just asked my doctor a couple of weeks
ago what to avoid. She said deep sea fish
(so the like swordfish.. And I don't know
what else is considered deep sea) because
of the mercury.
Before woman where told not to eat soft
cheeses. But she said that now, in
canada, all soft cheeses are pasteurized
(unless you buy it right from a farm). So
even soft cheeses are okay.
And I read about the deli meat too (but I
forgot to ask my doctor) but I heard they
are bad for pregnant woman because of the
chemical they put it the meat to keep the
colour longer in the deli. Just to be
safe, I just eat the pre-packaged stuff.
Thanks to all of yall.
Well I dont really eat sushi and I knew it
could be bad so now I dont eat it at all.
And its not like go every day to eat
shrimp or fish but I was wondering if
every now and then its ok.
About the cheese I did hear that soft
cheeses are bad but I love cheese. I dont
eat it everyday but I still would like to
enjoy every once in a while.
I would like to eat subway or quiznos but
I also want to be safe. Thanks again

ohhh girl!! I live in .New .Orleans and
loooove me some crawfish!! They are
totally save .B.U.T you need to watch how
many you eat beacuase of the sodium. Down
here we put an entire tub of .Zatarans
crab boil in the pot when we cook em!! So
I really have to limit myself when there's
a crawfish boil. I try to eat the corn
and potatoes but they're heavy in sodium
as well.
I actually heard that the only fish we
need to stay away from is shark. Now I
don't know who eats shark...But it doesn't
bother me. You can have sushi, but ask
what kind of fish they are serving. The
larger the fish, the more mercury they may
contain.
This is my 1st child and I know exactly
what you're feeling about not wanting to
hurt her. I've asked my .Dr about all of
these things and this is the response. I
totally trust that my .Dr wouldn't tell me
things are ok that may potentially harm my
baby.
Everything is best in moderation!!
Suck a head for me!!<~~~~ sooo
reffering to crawfish
Thanks sarah,
im not from lousiana but I love crawfish
too and I was really craving them so its
good to know I can eat them.
I dont eat shark and I also dont know who
does but neways I only eat catfish and
some shrimp like I mentioned before and of
course crawfish.
Do u know if ham (deli) is bad. I dont
see my doc till the 25th for my first
prenatal visit so I just want to make sure
of what I can eat. Thanks.

I don't eat it, not because you can't, I
just prefer not too. I don't like any
kind of cold cut though.
There is a bacteria called
.Listeriosis(sp?) that harvests on deli
meats and sometimes raw veggies. Uncooked
meats can be exposed to this bacteria as
well. From the research i've done i've
read that you should heat your deli meats
until cooked properly.
Let's say that your fridge goes out and
the meats in there have a chance to get
hot for a couple of hours. You would want
to dispose of those meats due to the
harvesting of .Listeriosis.
All of these findings are brand new
though. I'm sure our parents and
grandparents didn't hesitate to eat a ham
sandwich!!! Lol
hope this helps a little!

Listeria. Posted: 04-05-06 18:56pm
You need to aviod foods that would have a
high risk of carrying bacteria which could
cause listeria. Contracting listeria
(like food poisoning) could actually cause
serious harm, or even cause miscarriage.
(sorry I don't want to freak anyone out,
but I knew a girl who actually got it, and
she was lucky to keep her baby)
"risky" foods re pretty much the same as
foods you'd be care full about usually-
things that go bad quickly, or are extra
suseptable to bacteria.
Shellfish.(how many times have you been
sick after eating out and said to
yourself- must've been th prawns/shrimp
etc?)
uncooked or undercooked meat, fish,
chicken.
Deli meats becuse you can never be sure
how santary the conditions are in there-
also, how carefull they have been about
using different blades to cut raw and
cooked meats. Also can't be sure how long
things have been out for.
Pre-prepared salads etc- for the same
reason as the deli stuff.
Unpasturised milk.
Soft cheeses especially where mould is
part of it (bree, blue-vein etc). (ok if
cooked but must be brought to boiling
point- so only eat if you've done this
yourself)
raw eggs.
Soft-serve ice-cream.
Goats-milk & cheese.
Fruit or vegetables with mouldy or very
over-ripe bits (it is not enough to cut
the bad part out, just cut your losses!)
also be very careful with dried fruit and
also nuts.
Packaged deli meats-ham etc. Can also be
risky in case they are contaminated
between cooking and packaging. (sorry)
any left-overs or cooked food must be
re-heated really well to a temperature
that will kill bacteria, discard any
refridgerated left-overs or cooked food
after 24 hours.
Listeria is killed by cooking..
Limit tuna to 2 times per week.
Always be very careful about safe food
handling practices- common knowledge
things like washing your hands properly,
using diferent knives and cutting boards
for cooked meat, raw meat and vegetables.

Why is soft-serve ice cream on your list?
I've never heard that one. I don't think
I can go 7 more months without my dairy
queen blizzards...

Soft Serve Posted: 04-05-06 19:09pm
Because you can't be sure how clean the
machine is and whether "new" ice-cream
gets in contact with traces of old, evil
ice-cream.
That's what they tell us in australia
anyway- we've got a lot of guys going
around in vans who might not be too
carefull and are pretty hard for the
health department to monitor !!!
Probably in a big resteraunty place you'd
be hoping to be pretty safe.
I remember on some tv show years and years
ago they tested like, 30 samples of
soft-serve from a bunch of different
places, and the only one without harmful
bacteria in it was from mcdonalds.

Oh crap, i'm eat a ham sandwich as I type.
Oh well, it's all I have here right now.
I'm from the very south part of
louisiana, further down than new orleans
and crawfish is very plentiful down here.
I read everywhere that it's safe. I'm
cutting back because I just want to be
extra careful, but if someone has crabs,
crawfish, or shrimp i'll eat it. I ate
crabs sunday and crawfish yesterday and
today. I try to eat it no more than once
a week, but my grandma brought me some
crabs and my mom wanted crawfish last
night. I work with special needs
children and I see what high mercury
levels can potentially do, so I try to be
cautious and I feel bad when I eat it, but
I think everyone has some guilty pleasure
while pregnant.
I'm going to the doctor tomorrow and i'll
ask him.
