Bleeding Tonsils
Posted: 01-05-04 16:32pm

Five days ago I had trouble swallowing and felt dryness in the rear area of my tongue and throat. The next day these symptoms were still present. I got out of bed and spit some saliva into the sink, I noticed trace elements of blood in the siliva. A got a flashlight and notices that my right palatine tonsil had three fairly large orifices. Apon closer examination I noticed that when I flexed my tonsil area, as if I was tring to spit up mucus, there was small amount of blood that drained from the tonsil area onto my tongue. This presisted for five to eight spits then the bleeding stopped. This has occured now for five nights and I am begining to worry. What is wrong and is there anything I can do over the counter to correct this problem.

Regards,

chris

I think bleeding tonsils are considered pretty serious. I never had bleeding tonsils but I did have horribly infected ones and had to have them removed 8 months ago. After the surgery they tell you that if you have any signs of bleeding for the next two months you have to immediately go to the emergency room. The impression I got from the doctor was that it is difficult to control bleeding in your throat because its moist and you swallow constantly and that makes it difficult for clots to form. Therefore, you have to go to the emergency room and they do emergency surgery to stop the bleeding.

While yours doesn't sound very serious yet, if you let it go without treatment it may continue to get worse. You definitely need to go see a doctor.
