Please Help - Worried About Brown Discharge In Pregnancy. Posted: 04-11-06 03:01am
I'm 8 1/2 weeks pregnant, and last night
and today i've had some very slight
amber/brown cloured spotting, on the paper
this morning was a very small piece of old
dark brown blood. There has been no other
problems - no pain, i've been feeling sick
off and on and have the usual sore and
full boobs. I've previously had 2
miscarriages - one at 6 weeks and one at
10 weeks, so i'm terrified. Can my
pregnancy continue this time, or this this
a very bad sign? Please, please reply to
me! Thanks.

Hi chrissie....
They do say that brown blood is common in
pg and not to worry.... Its the red stuff
that can cause problems...
If it continues though, or if you get any
pain id go see the dr just to be on the
safe side...
Good luck

So far it hasn't got any worse, just a few
tiny spots of pale brown colour.
I will monitor the situation though and if
it should get any worse I will contact the
doctor.
Thanks.

Dont Want You to Worry Posted: 04-11-06 08:35am
Hi chrissie, i'm heather and I had a m/c
and that is how mine started out. You
need to go see your doctor as soon as you
can. It might not be anything either but
you really need to go to the doctor and
see how your baby is doing. Good luck!!
Dont mean to upset you its for your own
good, and your babys!!

Before reading your reply, I decided that
I had to speak to someone, so I did infact
do exactly as you said to do.
I rang my doctor and i've just returned
from an emergency scan.
I have to do the customary thing of go
back in a week. I have irregular periods,
so therefore I may not be as far along as
I thought. They could see the egg sack
(so at least its not ectopic) and they
also found I have a small fibroid which
they say should cause no problems as its
at the top of the womb and its so small.
They thought they could see a flickering
of the heart and picked up something on
the sound but they want to try again on
monday. Will keep you posted and thanks
for your replies to me.

The best to you! I will keep my fingers
crossed for you! I know I had a very
difficult time with the 1st actual
pregnancy and I do not wish it on noone!
Try the best to stay calm and take it easy
as much as possible, even though I know
that it is easier said than done!

Thank you for your kind wishes, I will do
my best to stay calm, i'm lucky that i've
got a fab husband and great friends, who
are there to help. Unfortunately, I do
tend to look on the bleak side of things,
that way it can only be a bonus if I get
good news. All we can do is wait and
hope.

brown stain is "old blood", meaning that
the blood has stayed an adequate time in
the acid secretions of the vagina to have
turned in color from red to brown.
Usually this means that the bleeding
occurred at a very slow rate and has not
continued.
Causes for bleeding in early pregnancy
include local irritation in the vagina or
on the cervix; increased blood flow to the
cervix (this occurs in many body tissues:
some women get nosebleeds in early
pregnancy and others notice increased gum
sensitivity and bleeding when brushing
their teeth). As the pregnancy nourishes
itself by tapping into your blood system
inside the uterus, it can be over-zealous
and there is some "spill" (much like when
you overfill a pot on the stove and drop
in the vegetables).
One in 4 ladies experiences some bleeding
(pink, red, brown) in early pregnancy and
for one half of them, it has no bad
meaning

Today i've had more discharge, more of it
and pinky this time.
I can only wait and see, I still have no
period pains and feel sick (although this
maybe anxiety). Only time will tell, but
I appreciate all your comments.

Update - Been For Scan Posted: 04-17-06 07:35am
Hello again,
on thursday the bright red blood began,
friday I started getting period pains and
by saturday night / sunday mroning I was
convinced I had miscarried. I got chronic
cramping pains and lost a lot of blood and
clots.
This morning I went for my scan and having
explained to the doctor what had happened
he was checking that the womb was empty,
however, he found not only was the egg
sack still there it had grown! He
couldn't say that it was a healthy
pregnancy as he couldn't get a clear view
inside the sack. They took blood and I
have to have more taken wednesday to check
the levels of pregnancy hormone. Since
returning home I have lost lots more blood
and a big clot and had more pain, so who
knows? This is definitely a wait and see
time.
Thanks again for your comments.

Final Update Posted: 04-19-06 16:33pm
I received conformation that my hormone
levels had dropped, which means
miscarriage. Given the awful pains that I
had experienced and the blood loss, there
was little hope really. My husband and I
have decided as its happened 3 times and
its devastating that we won't try anymore,
we have each other and thats enough.
I'm relieved to know one way or the other
really as its been a long wait to find
out. I have a scan next week to check the
womb is empty if not then it means a
d&c, we'll see, hopefully it won't
come to that.
Thanks for all your comments you all
helped a great deal during my ordeal.
Love to you all.
