Hi.... I am asking your advice because
i've reviewed other posts online and would
like some reassurance. I just posted
that I had unprotected sex w/ an
x-boyfriend in oct 2005. I didn't think
much of it until recently experiencing
some symptoms of ars. I did however,
donate blood in march 2006 w/ some family
members and am scared to have passed on
the "hiv" virus. I recieved a thank you
note and letter in the mail saying when I
can donate again... However, is there any
chance whatsoever that the blood tests
might have missed the antibodies?? Oct
2005 was my last encounter. He did come
inside of me so I think that makes it a
higher risk.... What are my chances of
contracting hiv? I know I will
definately never have unprotected sex
again after all of this anxiety. But I
am experiencing hot flashes, acne (never
had it previously in my life), skin
changes (red dots and rashes), and
fatigue. Thank you for reading this long
posts.

Hi,
yes, unprotected sex with someone of
unknown status is a risk for infection.
However, having ars symptoms now is
generally too late if you had the
encounter in october. Unless you are
undergoing chemotherapy, regularly taking
iv drugs or any other factor to
significantly reduce your immune system,
then initial hiv symptoms occur 2 -6 weeks
after the episode, or not at all. After
that point, antibodies are detectable.
As far as your blood transfusion goes,
yes they can detect hiv from an early
stage. They would not welcome you back to
donate more blood.
The only definite way to confirm your
status is to have a test. At this point,
it will be accurate and reliable. I am
highly confident of a negative result.
Especially after a single encounter (each
unprotected encounter with a person who is
hiv+ carries a risk of aprrox. 1%).

Thank you so much for your opinion.... I
am going to get a test just so I can live
with some sanity! I am very anxious b/c
I did have that episode when I was
slightly inebrieted and with still with my
boyfriend of 3 years to date. We have
resolved the "cheating/drinking" issue but
I am still primarly full of guilt and
remorse. I cannot imagine ruining his
life because I screwed up one night.
Thanks fitness..... I hope for my
boyfriends sake, and the blood
recievers...That I am negative.

To be honest, I am not entirely sure of
the policy of blood banks on informing
their donators of hiv.
Rest assured, if the blood bank detects
hiv, which they are able to do using a
variety of testing, the won't use it. Nor
would they invite you to donate again.
Best wishes for what I am sure will be a
negative result.
P.S what I wrote was not opinion. It was
the facts as current science knows them
p.P.S. It's 'finesse'.
