Anxiety Problem
Posted: 04-17-06 14:52pm

Hey, new here. I decided a forum would be best to get some feedback for certain conditions and illnesses. I didn't think I would find one quite this active, though. Anyway, to my little problem. It started late thursday night last week. I was laying in bed and suddenly it felt like my heart skipped a beat. I told myself it was just doing that thing it sometimes does. No problem at all. Oh, was I wrong. My heart started fluttering. It felt like it was jumping up and down in my chest.

I decide to get up and get myself a drink. That usually helps in situations like these. Nope, no go. I try sitting down and breathing deeply. Still not working. I just could not calm myself down. By then I started shaking and sweating, and I can tell you all I have never been so scared in my life. I thought I was dying. The more I thought about an impending heart attack, the worse it got. My dad gave me an acid blocker, and that calmed my stomach down, but my heart was still having a little party in my chest.

I got a tad bit short of breath after a bit, and I think I had a panic attack. The room looked as if it was floating on water, and I got sick to my stomach. After another 10 minutes of that, I finally calmed down. I was able to go back to bed and fell asleep at 2 in the morning. The next day at school, I had another, yet minor, attack during 2nd block. It went away after half an hour. I was fine the rest of the day.

Friday night. We had a tornado warning in effect for our area. I usually get a little nervous when the siren goes off, and this time it was horrible. The moment the siren went off, my heartbeat sailed to a steady 100+ a minute, I began sweating and shaking, and I had to take deeper breaths. Saturday. I thought I was going to be fine and that my problem was just a short temporary one. Nope. 2 hours after I awoke, I had one. It wasn't near as severe. I actually thought it was indigestion, because that time it was focused in my stomach. Another acid blocker fixed that. I went to bed fine saturday night, although my heart did flutter a few times.

Sunday, I was fine. I had a very minor attack in the evening, but it went away. I went to bed last night with no fluttering and no discomforts. Today, I had another attack. This time on my way to school. It got bad enough during 1st block that I asked to see the nurse. She said that it sounded like an anxiety attack. After telling me that, I have been better all day today, with the exception of right now. It's making me nervous just typing about my past attacks.

Is there any way I can help this, because it's really cutting into my schoolwork and it's making a nervous wreck out of me lol. Also, I need to know if you all agree that i'm having anxiety attacks. They seem to happen when i'm scared or excited, and get worse if I think of negative things. I actually thought I had aids or something this morning. : \

Hi sub_tonic. Yes, it does sound like panic attacks. Do you have trouble with acid reflux? Talk to your doctor about getting an upper endoscopy to see if you need to be put on acid-reducing medication. Your doctor should also do an ekg on your heart, which i'm sure will be normal. Bad reflux caused a few problems for me, only I didn't know that reflux was the cause. Not knowing the cause is what caused me to have anxiety/panic attacks. I am now being treated for gastroesophageal reflux disease and i'm taking zoloft + klonopin to calm my anxiety. Let us know what your doc says, take care!

I currently get anxiety attacks also! It truly sux, it doesn't ever feel like they are going to go away...
I have just had my first appointment with a psychologist, I strongly suggest that you go and see one too:) it felt so shameful for me to go because I am usually a very calm and under control type of person but this I can't control. The steps that she has given me so far are helping. Another suggestion is read heaps about it so you understand it. Panic attacks are totally normal and you will get over them as well....Well so I have been told!
Im from new zealand, so I don't know if you can get this book in the states, but it's called "living with it". It is the funniest and most fantastic book on panic attacks.
I hope that this has helped. Good luck!

Ok, this past week has been pretty good. Tuesday I went to the hospital and they saw I had a pulse of 175. Of course, that was mostly due to me being very nervous in hospitals. She took me to the er and set me up with the stuff, the iv, ect. After a while, I calmed down and my pulse returned to the 100-120 range, which is normal for me. They said I should cut back on caffeine and stop taking over the couter pills for my allergies. That was 3 days ago, and i've been pretty good since, but i've noticed something just now.

Every once in a while, if something exciting or stressful comes into my mind, my heart will start fluttering, and I will start sweating, but I don't shake, and I have full control now, because i'm really not worried about panic attacks anymore. This will happen when i'm eating as well, or if I drink a large cup of something. It happens when I do something requiring a good amount of physical strain on my body. My heart will just start fluttering, i'll get this extremely weird and uncomfortable sensation all the way up my throat, and i'll start sweating after a min.

I don't know what's wrong with me, but i'm doing pretty good by not letting it scare me, but sometimes I just can't help it. Somehow I don't think anxiety is my problem. Maybe there's something physically wrong with me. Whenever it happens, there's also a discomfort in my upper abdomen. Feels really weird, and if I let it go too long, I get nauseated. Does anybody have a clue of what is going on here? I'd really like know.
