My Baby Is Jaundiced!!
Posted: 04-27-06 19:52pm

Hey yall!! Sorry for leaving yall hanging yesterday with the "peeing crystals in urine" thread. We took her to the .Dr and he told me that I had to stop breastfeeding her for 24 maybe 48 hours. There is something in the breastmilk that doesn't allow the .Bilirubens to break down in her blood causing .Jaundice. So I have to supplement with formula and sugar water. We have to keep her in indirect sunlight to help break the .Bilirubens down. Her levels were 17.9 and we got her tested again today and they haven't changed. So.....We have to take her yet again to the lab and get more blood work done. :'o( my poor angel!!!

Oh yea, and she has a .Mongolian spot on her butt. It actually covers her entire left cheek!! Lol....I thought it was a bruise, but the .Dr said that it is common in mediteranian decent babies. Ya learn something new everyday.

Were they able to collect the blood via heel? Or did they have to shave her head?

Poor thing! I'm sure she's a strong girl. It's harder on us mothers to see them go through this.

She has breast fed jaundice. Her levels didn't rise until her 3rd day of life. We thought it was non physological jaundice, in which we would be advised to breastfeed, but in our case the breast milk is only hurting her at the moment.
Edit: it explains a lot about it in the book "what to expect the 1st year"

yea, she's running out of room on her heel though...She might have enough room for one or 2 more tests...If that.. I hope they don't shave her head!! Lol...I want to keep what little hair she has!!!

Lol sarah, the topic of this thread looks like you're apologizing that she has jaundice. :p

anyway, I hope she gets better really soon. The good part is that she won't even remember all this!

Lol...I just noticed that!! Tell my man that she won't remember that and I bet he'll beg to differ!!! Lol...I tell him that she'll be better in a week or 2 and we won't even remember being so worried. Trying to get that through to him is like getting a knife through a rock!!!!

Thanks for the encouragement!!

The good think is that because the level did not rise over a 24 hour period, she actually had a decrease because with each day the allowable level goes up, so if there is no increase over a day, it actually went down.

Fortifying with formula and light is about the only way to fix it. Food is actually the best way to cure the jaundice. With an increase in formula or additional breast milk, (hard to have more milk than what you are making) the blood is able to be processed and more excrement will come out and you will see her color work out quickly.

Good luck,

i watch a baby story every day on tlc (lol im bored at home) and apparently 1in 2 babies gets jaundice (wow!). Every single episode I have seen the mother had to stop breastfeeing (temporarily) because it was making the jaundice worse.

I was jaundiced when I was born, and I had to stay in the hospital for 2 weeks. Tell your husband that mine was apparently a pretty bad case but that if my mom hadn't told me, I would never know I had it. Lol. I don't remember a darn thing about it. :p

More Bad News....
Posted: 04-28-06 15:21pm

Well we went back to the .Dr today because her levels hadn't changed. When we tested her blood today they had actually increased. They went from 17.9 to 18.1 they thought I had begun to breastfeed again and I told them that I hadn't until further notice.

She's 6days old now and the .Dr said that the possibility of it spreading into her brain and causing damage was highly unlikely now. Instead of sugar water, we had to switch to dark .Karo syrup to make her poop. Once a day isn't enough for a .Jaundiced baby. She needs to poop about 3 to 4 times a day. One time actually allows the .Bilirubens to reabsorb into the blood stream.

The type of .Jaundice she has is breast fed .Jaundice. There is a hormone in the breast milk that actually inhibits the .Bilirubens from decreasing. I asked her .Dr if he thought it was toxic to her and he said she showed no signs of it being so.

Of course I started crying, becuase she's my angel and I just want her to get better and he looked at me and assured me she would be fine. I have to take her back to the .Dr for more blood work on .Monday (my birthday) and hopefully everything starts to look better.

Sorry this is so long, there's just a lot on my mind!
I'll keep yall posted!!

Aww sarah I hope things get better!!!!!

As for mongolian spot both of mine have it elisa is shrinking and cans covered all lower back and butt but is slowly shrinking...

Mongolian spots are simply birth marks in kids of asian/black/mediterranean decent (they look like bruises) blue to slate grey in colour.

I had a dr assume I was hitting my baby because of it but she failed to ask me if my kids were mixed and its quite visible im white and my daughter is darker than me!!

Take care of your lil angel!!

It's ok to be upset, sarah... Just means that you love her! But, who knows, maybe taking her back on your birthday will be luck! ;)

i'll bet this will be the only time in your life you will look forward to changing a poopy diaper. :p lol

give her a lil kiss for all of us, and i'll be thinking about you!

A lot of babies are jaundice, I know that it really is icky but you might think about getting a second opinion, one of my babies were jaundice but she was fine as far as the mongolian spot, is it raised, some times they go away and other times they get better. I have what is known as a port-wine stained bithmark, I have had it since birth and it goes from mu chin to neck, to the side of my face and some into my hair or head, the only time I have to be careful is when I have been out in the sun because it will break and bleed, kids used to make fun of me @ school but it just taught me to be tougher. My thoughts are with you and your baby, I am sure it is difficult, I hope you have someone their to help you!
Please, keep us updated but get some rest as she will need your strength!

Lol...When I first saw it I thought it was a bruise too from birth. But i'm .Creole and my fiance is .Italian so she's medeterranian--mainly from my side. I had the .Dr confirm it today because I remember your story!! My mom said I had one but it faded. My mom is from .Spain and extreemely fair skinned but my dad is .Creole and super dark. I read up a little on them and they said that blonde hair, blue eyed babies don't get them. If they do it's only in extreemely rare cases.

We're "cooking" her right now!! Lol....Most people try to avoid the sun form their babies, but of course, we want it!!!

Thanks for the support!!
