Headaches, Puberty, Epilepsy And My Daughter? Posted: 01-08-04 13:27pm
My daughter, 13, was diagnosed with
epilepsy when she was 3. Dr. Said it
was idiopathic after several eegs. First
on phenobarbitol had bad dangerous
reaction to it, then was put on tegretol
had allergic reaction to it, finally put
on depakote sprinkles and did well on
them. 5 years and no seizures or other
problems later I (yes I did it) took her
off the medicine. No seiazures now in 5
years and completely med free. My
question is this: she often (2 or 3 times
a week) has really bad headaches, not
quite migraines but pretty close.
Usually tylenol or motrin helps but does
anyone think it's possible that it is her
epilepsy or the fact that I started having
migraines about the time puberty hit?
this is all something new since no one
anywhere on either side of the family has
or has had epilepsy. Her pediatrician
says that she is healthy and not to worry
about the headaches unless they get
severe??? I want opinions please.

Dear mum,
I dont want to worry you
but I would say it was the epilepsy, I
would get it all checked out ok fully. If
your gp has already done this and knows
her history I would believe your family
doctor ok. That is if you have faith in
him. A close friend of mine has such bad
headaches that she clutches at her head
and then she has fits soon after. I would
be careful that your daughters headaches
dont make her have seizures.
Thats about all I can do
thankyou

From one mum to another,
my daughter is 10 and was diagnosed with
atypical absence seizures when she was 14
months old. The seizures stopped when she
was about 6 and she went on to have 3
seizure free years. The seizures returned
with a vengeance when she turned 9 and the
neurologist put this down to puberty, she
also started her periods this year. We
have had a terrible year, we are currently
on the fourth drug as she too had severe
side effects from each one we tried. She
suffers very bad headaches on a regular
basis which the neurologist puts down to
an accumulation of puberty and her
seizures.
It might be worth getting her checked out
again if you are still not happy as
according to our neurologist puberty can
trigger the seizures back off again.

Dear Moms With Daughters. Posted: 01-15-04 00:56am
I am 21 yrs old
i have only been diagnosed 3 months ago
but I feel I had epilepsy my entire life
but just couldnt explain what I felt or
why I was so tired all the time. Or why I
would wake during the night all sweaty.
My parents never cared and said I was just
a day dreamer who didnt listen in class I
was confused a lot during primary school.
I was a permi baby. But I was always a
damn good student when I got things
explained to me properly so that I thank
my nana for. I am so lucky that I never
got brain damage.
I am on tegretol. I have been told from
other young girls that its good for them
too it doesnt have many sideaffects.
So prehaps try it
