Mthfr Gene Mutation....anyone Have / Heard of This?? Posted: 05-08-06 00:05am
After many tests run by my genetic
counsler, I was found to be compound
heterozygous for the mthfr mutation. If
any of you have this or heard of this
please respond! It is a gene mutation
that increases risk for blood clots.
Thanks!

My sisters and I all have this mutation
and my mom has low folic acid in her body.
My sister had a possible mini stroke while
on birth control, and possible clots. My
other sister and I haven't really been on
birth control long enough to find out. On
the otherhand, My mother took birth
control for years. We all just take extra
folic acid, especially right now with me
being pregnant. I will be going to a
maternal fetal medicine specialist this
friday to make sure my baby is okay.

ChloChlo, please contact your OBGYN and
tell them of your history. My daughter,
23 , just found out because of other
female issues she has MTHFR. I myself
had a pulmonary embolism at 29 after
taking the pill for 10 days. I had two
children prior because I did not take
birth control. Great news though, I have a
beautiful 14 year old because of the high
risk DR I had. I was diagnosed with Lupus
Anticoagulant (my mother had lupus). For
the grace of GOD, I took Heprin shots
twice a day during the duration of my
pregnancy. Please don't be scared by
that. It is always best to know what is
ahead versus finding out after the fact.
However, my daughter (23) has not children
and just graduated college has severe
"female" issues and just went through
surgery to remove large cysts from her
ovaries. Any support you can provide to
her because of your success would be
greatly appreciated. She is feeling like
there are very few options for her to have
children. I will add you to my prayer
list and again any advise you could offer
her would be most appreciated. JP

Yeah, My OBGYN is well aware of what I
have. I actually just found out I have TWO
mutations. From what I can gather so far,
One involves the folic acid, and the other
mutation has to do with producing the
blood clot and it traveling to the fetus.
I'm not quite sure- I should find out more
this Friday. My sister originally was
tested for this because of a mini stroke
that she had while being on birth control,
and they tested me once I became
pregnant. So far everything is going
GREAT! At this point, they are worried
about me forming the clot, but it has been
found that folic acid will help to
decrease my homocysteine levels and in
turn decrease my chance of clots.
As far as your daughter goes, I am 23 as
well, Just graduated too and Everything is
going great. When I talk to doctors about
this, it leaves me to believe that there
is no reason to think negatively about it.
Yes, it kinda puts me at high risk, but,
as long as she starts her folic acid in
preparation, and takes it easy, I don't
see why she should worry. i don't quite
know what advise she is looking for, but I
was kinda worried that even my chances of
more children were low... But i feel a
lot better now knowing that mine is doing
good. I just pray that everything goes
well, and that it keeps kicking me!!! As
long as it is kicking... I know it is
there and moving. My mom also has this,
and had four wonderful daughters!
