Cant Sleep, Falling a Sleep Is So Difficult
Posted: 05-11-06 01:47am

Lately I have been having alot of problems falling a sleep. I keep on turning all night, my brain cant stop thinking. I need a way to fall a sleep.
I read a few articles on sleeping disorders. Being caused by stress. And other things. Is it safe to listen to some relaxing music to help me fall asleep.
Thanks

Hi elec,

of course its fine to listen to some soothing music before you go to sleep.

Standard stuffs you can try:
1. No exciting activities after 8.30pm
2. Try warm milk before bed
3. Learn to let go of 'to do' tasks, do this by writing down on paper
4. Listen to soothing music =)
5. Meditation

you brain is too active, you need to try to relax it.

I have always had a hard time falling asleep. There are many nights where I do not sleep at all then I have to go to work the next morning. I have been taking over the counter meds everynight. I relize this is not good-but I need my sleep.

Hello, if you're still watching this thread...

There are many self-help techniques you can do before bed to help you switch off your overactive mind and fall sleep. For example, forward bends which calm your nervous system; acupressure on specific points on your arms, legs and feet, and breathing exercises, which also calm you and help ensure a good night's sleep.

Here's a simple, safe, effective breathing technique to try tonight and every night...

1. Lie in bed on your back (no pillow or a very low one) with your arms by your sides or hands on your abdomen (whatever is more comfortable). Keep your eyes and mouth closed and breathe slowly, smoothly and deeply through your nose throughout the exercise.

2. All you have to do is focus on your breathing by counting your exhalations in sets of ten. Each time you reach ten, start at one again. If you lose count at any stage (initially this will happen often), start counting from one again. At some point, you'll simply fall asleep in mid-count. This exercise trains you to focus on your breathing (which calms you) and to control your mind (by penalizing it every time your thoughts stray).

Note: of course you also need to eliminate the causes of your sleep problems where possible. A few suggestions... Don't have a big dinner, especially of heavy foods, stimulating foods likes chilli and spices, or any coffee; stop doing work, especially mental work, long before bed time; try not to get emotionally upset or angry before bed; don't have a tv or computer in your bedroom. If you're in a stressfull job or relationship this can be a major factor as well.

Let me know how you get on.

Matthew
