Can Combining Alcohol with Xanax Stop the Heart from Beating Posted: 05-21-06 09:36am
I am bipolar type II with anxiety mixed in
and I am currently on three difrerent
types of medications. I take (total mg
per day) Wellbutrin 400 mg, Topamax 100
mg, and Xanax 1.0 mg. I take these meds in
dosages split in half twice per day. I'm
also on a weekly trial of Lyrica at 150 mg
for pain (which I don't know if I'm going
to continue).
I was wondering if is it safe to have an
occasional drink or two while on the
Wellbutrin, Topamax, and Xanax with the
dosages I'm on. I've been taking the
first two meds for about 2 1/2 years and
the Xanax for almost 2 years. I would
like to have a drink once in awhile but I
haven't touched any alcohol since I've
been on medication because I don't know
how they would mix and what the reaction
may be. I've heard both sides...that it's
safe to drink on occasion and it won't
hurt and to stay away from alcohol with
these meds because it can cause strange
things to happen. I've even heard mixing
Alcohol and Xanax together could also
cause my heart to stop. But I haven't
found any info to back this up.
It is true that alcohol and Xanax mutually
increase one another's effect when taken
together... but they won’t stop the
heart. One or two drinks of alcohol taken
occasionally shouldn't cause you any
problems. But remember! One or two
drinks, occasionally!!!
