Q: Pain Near Left Side
asked by: Mike Kelly on May 21st, 2006

Hello all, I have been experiencing a sharp, burning kind of pain about 3 inches below my naval, and about 3 or 5 inches to the left. Kind of between my front and my side. Whenever I stand up, lie down, straighten from bending over it stings. Sometimes, like right now, just while i'm sitting. When it happens, it will last about 10 seconds, however it is constantly tender. It seems to be getting progressivly worse. It's been about 5 days now. There is no bulge or swelling. Any ideas?

Ligaments
Are you pregnant?
If you are pregnant, that pain would be the round ligaments stretching. It happens when your uterus is growing. In the first and second trimesters you'll find you'll get it for a couple of weeks and then it'll go away, and it'll reappear a few weeks later. It doesn't happen much in the last trimester- or maybe it does and you just don't really notice anymore! You need to adjust your movements- stand up slower, don't twist around quckly, that kind ogf thing.
Scary things like etopic pregnancies would involve terrible pain on one side that doesn't go away after a few moments. It's totally different.
If you are not pregnant

Oooh, don't know what happened there- wasn't finished!~
if you are not pregnant, i'm not sure what it could be- i've heard you can experience pain on one side during ovulation though.
If it gets much worse or the pain stops going away after a few seconds, you should go to a doctor. My sister is way skinny, but she managed to hide a cyst the size of an orange .B.E.H.I.N.D a cyst the size of a grapefruit in her very flat tummy! (i think they were on her falopian tube)

Re: Per Mike Kelly
I have this same pain only it is above my belly button, and it is like a burn, cramp, pain all at the same time. My doctor told me it is either my gullbladder or an ulcer, and said if the pain happens before you eat and it is relieved when you eat, then it is an ulcer, and if it happens anytime, then it is probably the gullbladder, and suggested that I time when it happens etc. And then come back in a couple of weeks.. I freaking hate when doctors say that ! It is hard enough to get to the doctor once, then ya gotta go through it all over again in a couple of weeks!! So anyway, i'm not sure what it is, because it will happen anytime, it does however last more than 10 seconds when it happens :p.
