This Is *not* a Just Smoke 3 More Years Post... Posted: 05-22-06 19:27pm
So i'm flipping through the channels on my
tv this morning, and come across "daily
planet". A show on discovery channel that
documents latest inventions that will be
coming out in the next few years. Not
normally something I watch, but the intro
was worth the wait...A vaccination for
smoking. (sounds unbelievable right?)
so I sit and wait through the latest
robotics, and the pillows that display
text messages from your cell phone "honey
i'll be late for dinner by 15 mins", and
it finally comes on. (here's what I
remember)
so, your respiratory system, in
conjunction with your circulatory system
deliver niccoteine to your brain. You
inhale, it's broken down, the blood
travels to the brain carrying niccoteine,
making you "feel better" when you smoke
and "feel like cr*p" when you don't. Now
the brain works mysteriously...
There's a "flap" of sorts at your
brainstem that blocks harmful or
unnecessary items in your blood from being
delivered to the brain, antibodies, and
immunizations being two of
them...Niccoteine *not* being one of
them.
So this company in sweden has come up with
an ingenious idea. They have created a
vaccination that "tricks" your immune
system into thinking that niccoteine is an
**invader**! So what happens?
You smoke, the niccoteine is broken down,
goes into your blood stream and is
immediately attacked by your immune
system. The antibodies attach themselves
to the niccoteine particles, and are
blocked at that "flap" into your brain
stem.
So you're smoking, but your brain is
saying you're not, and can pretty much
smoke yourself silly and get no
satisfaction from it...Hence, no need to
smoke anymore.
These guys are in 3rd phase (i believe) of
testing, and so far have a 60%!!! Success
rate after 2 or 3 doses...With minimal
side effects. For those who don't think
too highly of 60% here's the stats...
they are hoping to have it released by
2010, and have heightened their success
rate, and drop the side effects
completely.
Now as I said, this isn't a post to say
"smoke for 3 more years, then get
cured"...I just wanted to share this
information and allow others to
potentially look into it themselves, or
make up their own minds about what to
think about it.

Yea, it does sound unbelievable, although
I believe science does a lot of good, i'm
highly suspect of anything
new....................Will this vaccine
make just nicotine undesirable or will it
also make other sustances ie food, drink
etc undesirable. Will they be some sort
of allergic reaction?An immune response?
We as humans naturally look for the easy
way out......The magic pill, the patch,
the latest fad, a guru, the vaccine etc
that'll be the final answer to rid
ourselves of this
addiction.............When the real
answer(in my opinion) is the hard
way.............As it is with most
addictions...........Willpower!
I know easier said then done, however I
don't want to find out 10 years down the
road this stuff causes birth defects,
mutations or even cancer.
Even my overweight daughter wants the easy
way out........"ma, isn't there some pill
I can take to lose weight?" or "when i'm
older can I get liposuction?"
what happened to good old fashioned eating
well and
exercise........Yikes!..........Sounds
like an effort, man.
Don't get me wrong, i'm not totally
dismissing it.....And who knows?!
But to me, at least, it'll be a true
victory.................When you can
say.......
I did it myself!!!!! :)

I agree totally, and unfortunately I don't
have many answers to the questions you
posed at the begining of your reply, I
only really put down what I could
remember. Like I stated though, I just
posted this for the information value, and
am allowing others to make their own mind
up about what to take from it.
I do believe that everything that happens
to your body can be controlled mentally,
you hear all the time about people beating
cancer cause they refuse to fall victim to
it. But there are some people out there
who don't have that strength of will.
For all anyone knows this shot could be
loaded with saline, and the belief that it
will make them stop smoking itself could
wind up solving the problem. Who
knows?
Personally, I want to quit by my own will,
and would rather not have to wait, or have
to say "i couldn't do it on my own".

I have read about this drug also. From
what I gather, it is basically a
chemically induced cold turkey. Which
basically means that the person will have
no choice, but to go through withdrawal,
because the nicotine is not reaching the
brain.
To be clear though. Withdrawal is not that
bad. It is the fear of not being able to
stop those craves by the only way we know
how. By smoking a cigarette that makes it
bad.
The pharmecudical companies, the Sugeon
General, the majority of quit smoking
experts, and the media have pounded into
our heads that quitting smoking is one of
the hardest things we will ever do. We
even have our own past failed attempts to
prove this. This has built up a wall of
fear of quitting and makes the person
quitting feel that only a lucky few get to
quit.
The truth is anyone can quit, when they
learn how and quitting is not scary when
you come to understand nicotine
addiction.
The physical part of addiction actually
plays the smallest part in quitting. It is
the brainwashing and association triggers
that plays the largest part and is the
biggest obstacle for the person quitting.
I don't know of any NRT or miracle drug
that can change how a smokers perceives
cigarettes.
I do know that education of this addiction
will help immensly.
The problem with this miracle cure is
this. I think I read to where ithe process
lasts a year. You take periodic shots in
this time. This keeps nicotine from
reaching the reward pathways. What it
doesn't do though is change how that
person sees cigarettes. They may very well
go through this whole process feeling as
if they are depriving themselves of
smoking. This is the usual downfall to
anyone's quit.
A person who has quit for a long time and
then smokes a cigarette, does not do it
for the need for nicotine. They do it,
because they are still under the illusion
that a cigarette will do something for
them. This is the downfall, because once
the person re introduces nicotine back
into their system, the cycle of addiction
starts over again. This makes a person
believe that they are physically addicted
forever and makes quitting seem daunting.
I have suffered a lot from this nicotine
trap. I have tried to quit smoking
countless times. It wasn't until I learned
about nicotine addiction that quitting
became fairly easy. I never had willpower.
I never had a quit last more than 3 weeks.
I was never stronger than my addiction.
The trick for me was that I got smarter
than my addcition.
Happilly, I haven't smoked a cigarette in
over 2 years and 7 months and I know that
I am done smoking.
Education is key. It will erase the fear
people quitting have.
Eric
P.S.
Those stats on quitting are a little
inaccurate. Go to the American Cancer
Society and the 2003 report shows that 91%
of the people who successfully quit , do
it cold turkey.
Australia did a similar study in 2006 and
88% in australia quit cold turkey.
The NRT study success rate has a lot of
fine print that they don't want any of us
to know about and a lot of the stats given
are from the pharmecudical industry and
not independent research that is in no way
affiliated with them.
Remember within 72 hours most nicotine is
gone and this is where withdrawal peaks.
Within 2 weeks all physical withdrawal is
usually over.
The biggest obstacles are association
triggers and the brainwashing caused by
addiction.
