I was wondering how long it takes for
conception to occur after intercourse
assuming pregnancy does occur. Does it
happen pretty much right then or could it
take as long as a couple weeks, what is
the longest it could take? Just
wondering where to start counting from to
count out 38 weeks for the due date.
Didn't want to count from the actual time
of intercourse since I don't know when
conception really happens. Also, how
much later than the 38 weeks untill the
baby comes or the doctor decides to
induce. Thanks.

You count from the first day of your last
mentrual period (.L.M.P). You don't count
from conception.
Conception occurs in an unknown time
frame. The egg and sperm have to meet and
sometimes there is a vast space between
them! Once they meet, there is awhile
before they implant on the uterus.
Use the .L.M.P for calculating how far
along you are.

Ok, i'll explain the reason I asked those
questions then. I had intercourse with
this person no later than november 9th but
I did not ejaculate in her. October 18
next year I saw that she was pregnant and
thought nothing of it. I don't know when
she had the child but she looked quite
pregnant at the time. Initially it
doesn't seem possible but I wanted to be
sure. Obviously that's 11 months and
about 9 days and the rule of thumb is 9
months, so initially I didn't think
anything more about it. But I am not
sure how late you can be and how long it
takes for conception to occur and if the
max of those factors could equal that time
frame. I'm just tired of thinking about
it and i'm 99% sure it's not me but that
small possibility drives me nuts. Anyone
know if this is something I should look
further into with this person. Last I
knew she supposedly has a father for the
child but didn't know if I was a
possibility too. Thanks

Conception occurs normally 3-5 days after
intercourse. So if you had sex the 9th
she could have concieved the 9th, 10th,
11th, 12th, or 13th if the baby was yours
that's when she would of had to of
concieved. So she would of had to have
been ovulating those days.
I recommend getting a paternity test to
put your mind at ease. No use in
freaking out over it with an easy solution
of a paternity test. :) or you could ask
her about it and trust her answer.

Thanks, I think that pretty much answers
my question. To be generous I was
counting out 3 weeks after intercourse
first, then counting out 38 weeks form
there. That would still be 8 weeks late
which I don't believe is possible. I
think 3 weeks would be plenty of time for
conception and i've heard that a doctor
won't let you go more than 2 weeks late
anyway. Also, like I said, I don't know
when she actually had the child either.
I'm just counting to that day that I last
saw her pregnant. Also there was no
ejaculation but I know that's still not a
guarantee. Thanks for the help I think I
can put my mind at ease now.

Yeah there is no possible way sperm would
live 3 weeks, not even 2 weeks not even
more than 1 week. The most sperm could
possibly live is 7 days and that's in the
right cervical fluid and with extremely
healthy and strong sperm which isn't to
common.
The most common for sperm to live is 78
hours or 3-5 days :) conception occurs
right when the egg meets the sperm. I
hope that helps hun :)

Thanks, I was a bit confused on the reply
from "ingi" where he or she said that
after the sperm meets the egg "it takes a
while before they implant on the uterus".
I didn't know if that was another time
frame after the sperm meets the egg before
conception really starts and to count from
there. Or, like you said, conception
occurs when the sperm meets the egg and I
can just count out from there. So if
sperm can't last any longer than 7 days
then she would've conceived no later than
a week later if at all. Thats pretty
much what i'm thinking unless there is
this time it takes to implant on the
uterus, then perhaps slightly longer?
Anyway, starting two weeks after
intercourse, then counting out 38 weeks
from there, then to oct. 18 when the
earliest she could've had the baby would
be 9 weeks and 2 days late. That would
be impossible right? Thanks, I
definitely learned allot about this.
