Hi

really want some advice - severe constipation - I am 18 weks pregnant - had constipation from 8 weeks and have been told by my doctor that it could be from previous scar tissue (had cysts removed from ovaries a year ago)

he has now recommended I have enemas twice weekly - really worried about any effects to the baby - but I can't take the pain anymore - have had to leave work and can't even get up most days as pain so severe.

Any help is appreciated!

Madeleine

4.Stool softeners-colace or pericolace..

Thanks for all the suggestions, have tried all of these - I live in the tropics so drinking over 4 litres of water a day - on fibregel and bran etc. Even tried prunes, pear juice....... Etc

changed my eating plans, have a pool so swim for 30 minutes a day and walk for 30 minutes a day I do everything by the book high intake of fruit etc - even tried herbal remedies - but no movement!

I am resigned to the fact that I have to have regular enemas and really don't have any objections but want to know if I am damaging the baby. The hospital and doctors have said that I cannot undergo any further tests due to my pregnancy and this is my only choice. I live in a small town and there si nowhere else to get opinions - so just need to know if the baby will be fine using twice weekly enemas.

Thanks

Over use of enemas will actually relax your colon making it work less. This causes the use of more enemas. And the cycle continues.

You should seek a doctor who will help you to find something else and ween you off enemas. They aren't good for your health long term. They may solve your constipation issue, but they could be causing a dependency on them - and it sounds like it.

Good luck~

I have actually heard enemas make some woman constipated...

I have ibs and it usually acts up during pregnancy or during your mentrual cycle in woman you may want to seek a second opinion im not saying this is what you have but it may be something to look into I go from being constipated to the other extreme.

Another thing you need to becarful of is a bowel obstructions sometimes food or a foreign object can get lodged in the intestines thus causing you to be constipated till the point there is to much c5rap in there it needs to be surgical removed

i would definatly seek a second opinion!!
good luck~!

I am not a Dr. Ask your dr or pharmacist if magnesium citrate is okay to use when you are pregnant, it is used frequently in hospitals and such and when you have a colonoscopy but I do not remember if it is safe to use if you are pregnant so be sure to ask your Dr. It is pretty reasonable in price but it tastes not to good but it is bearable. Ask him about a stool softener too and a laxative, it must be horrible and you do not need any more problems such as hemorohoids(sp) and pushing being pregnant.
Prunes and prune juice and apricots do sometimes help also.
Good luck!

enemas make people consitpated because they relax the colon and make it work less to move fecal matter. Thus prolonging the constipation and the need to keep using an enema or laxatives.

You can also abuse laxatives and become dependent on them as well. The best thing to do, if you can, is to control your bowel movements and constipation with diet.
