It's meant to be really good - definitely worthwhile if you can afford it.

I dont have that money but def if you do I would do it because who knows what they will do in the future with stemcells

I'm going to try to save up for it because i'ld feel so horrible if something happened to my baby that could have been cured if I had prioritized putting money aside for cord blood banking.

Also while i've been reading about it and all the storage plans say they are for like 15, or 18 years. And i'm sure if my kid fell ill it would be more likely later in life than in the first 18 years. I mean you never know, but why only save it for 18 years? Does it have some sort of life span? That seems a bit silly.

Can cancer be genentical? Like are certain people more likely to get it because of their gene pool, or is it completely random. Because like no one in my extended family has died or had any kind of cancer.

Cancer is genetic but their is certain things that you do in life that will make you more prone (smoking for example) I dont care for blood banking their are so many gentic dieseases that have no cures and I said if my children got them blood banking wont help.

My son has to get tested for md(musuclar dystrophy in a few years) they will just do a muscle biopsy

most dieseases are gentic I wouldnt worry too much and what alot of you guys dont understand is that the stem cells are actually your blood just enriched abit if you were to take vitamins everday and eat well/stay healthy they could probally help ur son as well dna will always be the same cant change that!

I decided i'm going to donate it to a public cord bank because then it can be used for sure. If they have that available here, because this is thompson manitoba, the freaken problem of north america.

The alberta cord blood bank is probably the one closest to me which accepts donations. Yay. I feel like a can help someone. I hope they keep track of who uses who's cord blood so I can get a letter or something if someone's life was saved or something.

Any girls who can't afford to save it for their own baby should definitely look into donating it!

Besides, I read this on wikipedia.

"according to research in the journal of pediatric hematology/oncology (1997, 19:3, 183-187), the odds that a child will need to use his or her own stem cells by age twenty-one for current treatments are about 1:2,700, and the odds that a family member would need to use those cells are about 1:1,400."

its not for the blood. Its because cord blood has lots of stem cells in it. Stem cells are cells that can be made into any type of cell. They are used to cure genetic disorders and some cancers.

i read that sometimes ob/gyns charge a $100-$250 collection fee. But that this may be covered by insurance, and that in many cases ob/gyns decide to donate their time for this. In which case it is free!
