First Trimester Weight Gain Posted: 05-30-06 01:54am
This is my first pregnancy - I am only 10
weeks and i've gained 13lb! I keep
growing at enormous rate and I am not sure
that it's normal anymore. No one I know
gained so much weight before the 3rd month
of pregnancy. I certainly eat more than
usual - because I get very sick every 4
hours if I don't put something in my
stomach. I am experiencing day and night
nausea, so I am unable to do any type of
exercise and my doctor said it's fine if I
don't for now.
I started watching what I eat - I can't
go on my normal diet 'cause I do require
carbs - they make feel a little better.
I just start feeling very depressed about
my looks- i've never been so huge in my
life even though i've always struggled to
keep my weight under control. If I am +
13lb now, what will I look like at 9
months? Can someone tell me how to get
my weight gain under control while having
a healthy pregnancy?

I'm only 5 weeks, &.I've already
gained 5lbs. So i'm about on the same
track as you. I'm not sure if it's normal
to gain so much so soon. But .I'm already
starting to look like .I might be
pregnant! My mom doesn't know .I am yet,
&she's been commenting on it.
".You're hungry again?" ".Why have you
been eating so much!?" .It's getting
harder to hide! Lol.

Just wait till she finds out - she'll be
on your case constantly. I told everyone
early as I felt I have to explain weight
gain. I thought their support would make
me feel better, but now it's even more
pressure - every member of my family
feels they need to give me an advice or
comment on my eating habits. I feel like
under a microscope. Even my husband
tells me what I should or should not eat -
not knowing a thing about pregnancy.

Correct me if I am wrong but youre not
suppose to gain any weight or very, very
little in your 1st trimester. I am 14
weeks and agined 6 lbs and my Dr. Was
extremely pleased with this amount. At
1st I thought it was not normal but he
says its very good.

Everyone is different. In the first
trimester they like you to gain only 3-4
pounds. Then it's a pound a week until
you deliver.
At 14 weeks i'd gained 5 pounds. At 17 I
was up another 8(!). My doctor said not
to worry about it unless i've put on
another 8 pounds by my next appointment.
I just don't get it though, I haven't been
eating much more than normal. Oh, the
joys of pregnancy.

2 lbs.
Now i'm 23w1d, and i've only gained 6 lbs
so far. I don't really know how since
i've been eating everything in sight. Lol

Alanna: thats incredibly awesome!!
Jessica: slow down!!!! I was tiny when I
got preggy. I started at about 130 and
when I delivered I was 195!! I have
officially demolished my body!!!!
I am en esthiologist and deal with the
problems of the skin and there is
literally nothing I can do until my
stretchmarks heal. I didn't get my 1st
stretch mark until I was about 30/31
weeks. Then they spread like wild
fire!!!! Beware!!!!
I used cocoa butter 3 times a day since
the day I conceived! But there is no
stopping a stretchmark if you grow too
quickly!!!
Good .Luck!!

Doctors say the baby only needs 300 extra
calories per day. Try snacking on fruits
and veggies between meals so you don't get
too queasy. Remember: the "eating for 2"
thing is a myth. 300 extra calories.

Talk to your Dr. It is very important
not to have a lotof weight gain while
being pregnant or even not being pregnant,
you can talk and listen to a nutritionist.
Use table muscle by pushing yourself
away from the table and leaving a couple
of bites left on your plate. Avoid fast
food as much as possible as much as junk
food(iknow it is easier said than done).
I used to struggle with my weight and I
realize how difficult it is and I still
get the munchies now and then. The main
thing is is to do the best you can before
it leads you into depression, an eating
disorders and other problems.
The best to you and yours!

I am 30 wks and 1 day and at my
appointment on 5/26/2006 I had lost all 7
lbs that I gained during my whole
pregnancy so far. (i am going thru a lot
right now, I do know that losing my weight
might be a bad thing) I asked my doctor to
see if this was a bad thing, and he said
that as long as my uterus and baby measure
the right amount for the number of weeks I
am there isn't a problem. Does that make
since?

when I finally delivered! Luckily i'm
back down to 140 right now, but flabby
belly!! Lol and I did not have 1 stretch
mark till 2 days after delivery! Sucky!

I'm 15 weeks and 2 days and i've put on
3kgs - which I think is around 6 pounds???
(correct me if i'm wrong!) in the book
i'm reading it says it's healthy/normal to
put on 1-2kgs in the first trimester then
0.5kg every week after that. But looking
at me it looks like i've put on about
6-7kgs!

yep, that's right.
It's like one small potato, or a sandwich,
and that's all you need, if that.
That said, I gained about 30 kilograms
with each of my pregnancys. What is
that-like 70 pounds? I don't know, ask a
drug dealer!
The first time wasn't so bad, 'cos I was
underweight to begin with (no stretchmarks
that time, not even one)
the second time-whew. I'm back to pre 2nd
pregnancy weight now (6 months on) nut.
My skin is all stretched and loose, so the
more weight I lose, the worse it actually
looks.
Eat when you feel you need too, but try to
make a healthier choice, something like a
piece of fruit, or a handful of nuts- rice
cakes are nice and filling too.
I wish I had been more careful.

It's funny how everyone talks about what
is normal weight gain. I guess for
people who never had to diet in their life
- it's ok to add a potato a day and still
lead a healthy pregnancy. The problem
is I used to starve before the pregnancy
just to keep my figure in a normal range -
I ate at most 2 times a day ( no dinner),
mostly salads and nearly no carbs. Now I
read 'healthy suggestions' that state my
baby needs meat, protein, calcium, carbs,
dairy, veggies - the list is so long.
How do I eat all that and not gain weight?
I tried to stick to just salads, but
they are no help - I get very dizzy and
sick if I don't have carbs every 3 hours
or so.

hun, your pregnant. Just eating a salad
and starving yourself is a no no. You
need the normal 1500 calories a day, plus
300 extra for the baby. You are gonna
gain weight. You are growing a whole
person in there. So get over your fears
of being "fat" and just eat healthy ie:
protein, carbs, fruits, veggies, and
calcium. Now is definitely not the time
to worry about dieting.

I know it seems overwhelming .Jessica, but
there are ways to eat right continuously
throughout the day and gain a healthy
amount of weight. In fact, eating many
times throughout the day in smaller
portions helps your body metabolize
calories better. If you eat only twice a
day, your body goes into starvation mode
and turns the calories you do consume into
fat - something you can blame evolution
for.
According to one web site, your body's
calorie needs can be calculated as
follows:
for an adult woman, multiply your body
weight by 10, and then add your body
weight to that value. (ex.
120-pound-woman = 1200 + 120 = 1320
cal/day. Add around 300 to that for your
pregnancy.
I'm not pregnant, but I recently gave my
diet an overhaul because I just was
feeling sluggish all day. Now, a typical
day for me goes like this (and it can for
you too, with some variations):
1.) I always eat breakfast - cereal,
low-fat yogurt, or oatmeal.
2.) mid-morning snack - fruits and veggies
are good for you and are satisfying.
They'll help give your body nutrients the
baby needs.
3.) lunch - lean turkey breast on
whole-wheat bread is a great choice. You
can absolutely eat carbs... Just try to
eat the ones that are good for you.
White bread is sugary and has no
nutritional value. Whole wheat products
are more filling, too. When you buy
groceries, check the food labels and avoid
buying anything that has high fructose
corn syrup or partially hydrogenated oil
in the first five ingredients. You want
your food to be as pure as possible, as
nature made it. It's the best food for
you and your baby, and it ensures you
won't gain needless pounds.
4.) mid-afternoon snack: nuts, like
almonds or cashews (non-roasted), are so
filling and provide healthy omega-3 fats.
Mix them with raisins for extra fiber.
5.) dinner - essentially the same as
lunch. If you like pasta, try to get
non-enriched products. Barilla plus is a
good choice.
6.) dessert - dark chocolate is good for
your heart, because it has antioxidants.
I hope some of this information helped.
The book that really inspired me to change
my eating habits for the good of my body
was you: the owner's manual. It's on
amazon, and there's a show about it on the
discovery health channel. I promise that
if you change your diet to include some or
all of the tips I supplied, you'll feel
full and gain a healthy amount of weight
during your pregnancy. Best of luck to
you.
