Spotting And Early Periods
Posted: 05-30-06 12:44pm

Hello,

i am 22 and I have been on alesse for 2.5 years. I have never really had any problems with the exception of the odd time that I begin having my period a week early (during my last week of pills) and it continues on into the week without pills. The doctors at the health services center at my school have never really commented on this "phenomena" or motioned for a change. Anyways the early periods have been happening a little more frequently lately (not always a full week early but still early) and at the moment I am a week into my pills and have already begun spotting a little bit. I nearly missed a pill on saturday night (it is tuesday today) and ended up taking it 5-6h later than usual. Now I am finding brown discharge when I wipe, occasionally on my underwear as well since the day after I nearly missed my pill. I am not worried about pregnancy as intercourse with my partner has always been protected as well, and I know that it cannot be an std. What could this be due to? Is it time to request a change in pills?

Thank you,

aliera

Just so you know :)

any bleeding that you get that is not on your "period/placebo week" is not a period..No matter what.. It is only breakthrough bleeding, and yes can be heavy. When a doc asks you "when is your last period" and you say "now", they assume you are on your placebo week..You say my last period was "such and such date, but I am having bleeding right now"

it very well could be time for a pill change if this continues. Have you missed a pill, taken them late? Taken any herbs and diet pills? Some of those can interefere with your pill.

Thank you for the reply, I appreiciate any advice I can get. And when I am with a doctor I do refer to my placebo week as my period week, it's just that sometimes the best way to describe the breakthrough bleeding is by calling it a period. But it's good to know that it can be that heavy.

I took a pill about 5 hours late on saturday night/sunday morning and I started getting the brown spotting sunday evening. I take vitamin c and zinc supplements regularily and i've also been consuming a lot of caffeine this week (which I normally rarely do). The only reason why i'm concerned is because I have never had spotting so early on in my cycle. Like I said usually it's a week before my placebo week if I do get it but this is two weeks before.

Thanks!
