After Effects of Chemotherapy Question
Posted: 06-06-06 08:38am

In august 2002 I had a partial masectomy followed by four treatments of adriamyclin/cytoxan chemo and radiation. In july 2003, I hurt my back and was treated with an injection which had me back on my feet within 48 hours. Since then, I started experiencing leg pain. I have had an mri which only showed arthritis in my lower back. I have also had a very painful nerve test up and down my right side that came back with good results. My pcp and oncolgist both think its arthritis. My gut feeling tells me it is an after effect of the chemo. Prior to my cancer experience, I was able to run up and down the stairs. Now I am just too stiff to really move at all. Last week my pcp prescribed nortrittlyn at 25 mg 1 times per day and naprosene 2 times per day. This does seem to relieve some of the pain and stiffness. Any input would certainly be appreciated.

Thanks for your time!

dear auntclaire: the symptoms you describe are not typical side effects or after effects of these chemotherapy agents. You might seek the opinion of a spine specialist if for no other reason than peace of mind.

it's not very likely that chemo would affect one nerve only. Having hurt your back, and having the symptoms respond to treatments for that situation, it sounds like the two are unrelated, in my opinion.

Hi, I had my chemo in 2004 and am also struggling with pain. Mostly in the lower back, under my ribs and neck areas. I don't believe that chemo has caused this....Maybe the radiation?
There are a few ladies who had chemo and radiation with me and they are also experiencing problems.
When and if I ever find out, I will be sure to drop you a line.
Please do the same for us.
Bye - good luck
