Q: Advice Needed Here!

Thank you in advance for anyone who can help me. I am trying to find some information for my little sister. She is 18 and just turned 37 weeks today (mon. Jan. 12, 2004). Tuesday of last week she went into the hospital with pains and we thought she was in labor. The doctor told her that she was three cm. Dilated and the mucus plug had came out. They told her to rest at home (we are about 5 minutes from the hospital) and when her contractions got a bit closer to come back. Then she was at about 14 minutes between contraction. They would get a bit closer then she could not tell the difference between the contractions and just straight pain (she is having alot of back pain). So this has been a week so far and nothing. I have been doing alot of research and everything I read says that it would be about 24 at the most that you could be dilated and then go into actual labor. Now my question, is this normal? Today she went to the hospital to be checked just to give her a piece of mind because she is very scared and the doctor on duty (which she dealt with at the visit to the hospital last week) told her to go home cause she was not in labor and she shouldnt be there. My personal opinion is the doctor is not being very professional, she did not let my sister ask one question or say anything. She just looked at her and said go home your not in labor. We are very confused to if this is normal. If someone could please help us out we would appreciate it. We are kinda in the dark, her doctors will not inform us or answer any of our question. Please just give us a bit of advice on what to expect during this and if all this is normal. Thank you so much for your help. It's just my sister, her boyfriend and me and I dont know what I should do.

Thank you!

Umm!
Well, I cant tell you if this is normal, but I have heard of this happening. You should check with your health provider and see if you can take her to a different hospital, maybe even go to the same hospital and ask kindly for a different doctor. Allot of girls who are in pain are just in pain and often cannot be very descriptive of where the pain is and how they feel. You should seriously consult with another doctor on something like this. Sorry I couldn't tell you anything of much value!

I have a friend at work that was pregnant last year. I can remember her walking around the office 3cm dialated for about 4wks. She was about 37 wks. Also. She had no pain like your saying your sister is having. You may want to ask another doctor. I would be really angry if I was having pains like that and the doctor wouldn't even listen. She knows her body better than anyone else.

Ask For Another Doctor!!!
Don't let any doctor treat her like that. If they act like that now what will happen when she actually has to start pushing. She should be able to trust every nurse or doctor that comes in contact with her. Being that she is young you would think that they would be more supportive and take the time to ease her mind. She is probably scared but knows her body better than that doctor. I think it may be ok to wait until the contractions are strong and consistent 5min. Appart or less. If the water breaks don't let it go too long. She will be ok being that she is so far along. It will be any day now..... Smile

Thank you guys so much for all your help. We got a different doctor now that informed us alot more, so that makes us feel a bit better. We are also in the process of making sure we do not have to deal with the doctor that treated her so rudely. You ladies are so supportive and very willing to give advice.

Thank you again and god bless you ladies
