New Here And Worried About My Mom, Please Help
Posted: 06-09-06 10:04am

Bare with me this is my first forum posting....My mom is 52, a smoker, and on crappy state insurance that wont let her see a decent doctor. That being said heres whats going on....
Her symptoms are :
headaches
red skin spots (not itching)
insomnia at times
dizziness
ears ringing
extreme tiredness at times
weakness
bladder pain (when full)
spasms in toes and feet
hot flashes

she had some blood tests done and everything looked normal except her red blood cell count was 5.58 (high), hemoglobin was 16.9 (high), and hematocrit was 49.5 (high)
we've searched the net and don't have a clue whats going on. The doctor doesn't know either and doesn't seem concerned at all, he just says oh thats weird I don't know

any ideas as to where we should be searching? Or what it might be?

Is she going through the menapouse? I think you will need another doctor for some different advise.

Hi there and welcome! I am sorry to hear about your .Mom, just ask her dr to do a referral to a specialist that is more in that type of field, the state should then okay it or one similar. I am not a dr but it seems to me that they should be running more blood tests on her, has the dr given her any different meds or is there any of the meds that she is taking that has these side effects, could she be starting into menopause, has she seen a gyno for a pap smear and talked to them about it. Sometimes it helps to talk to your .Mom' social worker and dr and be a little firm but not nasty or buligerent(sp) it sometimes gets the message across, she should have a right to a second opinion anyway.
Good luck to you and your.Mom and let us know what you find out.

I'm new here and i'm sorry to hear about your mom. I have some of your moms symptoms and alot of different ones too. You may want to look up polycythemia vera. It's a rare blood disorder. Ask her doctor about it and if he/she doesn't know anything about it, you may want him/her to refer your mom to a hematologist.

It wont' hurt. Hematologists specialize in blood disorders.
