Well put megums.

Ingi, I am sorry but I totally disagree. It is your opinion that having wine occasionaly is"ok". I have done the research:

"during pregnancy, how much alcohol is too much?

No level of drinking has been proven safe. The full pattern of fas usually occurs in offspring of chronic alcohol abusers, most often in women who drink four to five or more drinks daily. However, it has occurred in women who drink less. Arbd and arnd can occur in babies of women who drink moderately or lightly during pregnancy.

Researchers are taking a closer look at the more subtle effects of moderate and light drinking during pregnancy. A 2001 study by researchers at wayne state university in detroit found that 6- and 7-year-old children of mothers who had as little as one drink a week during pregnancy were more likely than children of non-drinkers to have behavior problems, such as aggressive and delinquent behaviors. These researchers found that children whose mothers drank any alcohol during pregnancy were more than three times as likely as unexposed children to demonstrate delinquent behaviors

But it's ok for my friend to be prescribedcodiene while she is pregnant? I find all of it a little off.

I can find just as many studies that say the opposite

the scottish executive health department advise that light, occasional drinking during pregnancy (one or two units once or twice per week) is not likely to do any harm

webpage: http://www.Nh slothian.Scot.Nhs.Uk/publications/annual_r eports/public_health/2003/ch4/04.Html

alcohol
heavy or frequent drinking is known to cause harm to your baby.

There are mixed opinions as to whether light occasional drinking during pregnancy harms your baby, so the safest option is not to drink alcohol at all.

webpage: http://www.Shrewsbury.Gov.Uk/public/ lifeevents/family/havingababy.Htm

all I said was do your research and do what you feel is comfortable for you and your baby.

*edited to add this link that asks if .European views on drinking occassional glasses of wine are different than .American views*

Nothing wrong with having a glass of wine or beer while pregnant. European woman drank wine and beer for centuries and had 10-15 babies per household..This includes both my grandmothers and my mom used to have an occasional glass of beer while pregnant with me and my siblings...Absolutely nothing wrong with anyone in my family, we are all pretty successful and healthy...And I have had a glass of wine too! And a few sips of beer here and there!

Well thats really spectacular:roll: I dont understand why anyone would want to take that chance.
when a pregnant woman drinks, alcohol passes swiftly through the placenta to her baby. In the unborn baby’s immature body, alcohol is broken down much more slowly than in an adult’s body. As a result, the alcohol level of the baby’s blood can be even higher and can remain elevated longer than the level in the mother’s blood. This sometimes causes the baby to suffer lifelong damage.

no. Actually, no one ever said illegal drugs were ok to use. And I never said alcohol abuse was good either. I said an occassional glass of wine that my doctor told me to drink!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but I guess you didn't read that part. It's ok. I'd rather listen to someone who actually has a degree in medicine and not just a search engine. But, hey, to each his own.

As far as finding the answer you want on the internet, it is easy. I can find just as many studies to counteract whatever it is you post. So the point goes back to what I originally posted: make your own decisions per your personal moral conviction. But trying to argue people out of the research and personal choices they have made is a waste of time.

I'm not trying to change your opinion.

she def. Is entitled to her opinion but to say that about cocaine that was just plain disguting. How does a glass of wine in the last 6 months compare to coke? That was out of line and totally ridiculous

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and everyone was raised in various cultures so we're gonna have culture clashes here. An occasional glass of wine or beer is fine according to some docs, (not something I did when pregnant but my doc told me I could have a glass at the x-mas partyif I wanted, I did not since I figured what's the point of having 1/2 glass? Lol alcohol in the first tri is not reccomended (except for those of us that did not know we were pregnant and might have drank at the begining.) that is usually when fas occurs.

yeah it is a matter of opinion and the way youre brought up. And I didnt intend to bash her opinion of it but there is no need to be so rigid with your opinion either. My Dr. Too said once in a while there is nothing wrong with having some wine. I dont agree with hard liquor......But wine and a beer in my books is just fine.

i didn't think I was being rigid with my opinion... Maybe I read it wrong.

I think the biggest thing is everyone is different every baby is different. My best friend doesn't smoke or drink (never really has) and had probs with both her pregnancies and both kids have health probs. I on the other hand drank before knowing I was pregnant and smoked weed before knowing and didn't quit cigs till I was about 4 months along. Trey's a huge happy healthy baby. We thought he had asthma and I felt horrible but come to find out it was mold in my old place and now that i've moved he has no more breathing probs at all. It's all a matter of personal beliefs and values and culture.

I think it all depends on how much you want to risk over a glass of wine.....

its not your business what I take personal or not melissa...She made a really bad remark ...And saying that I would think cocaine is alright is unacceptable ...And it is taking it too far. You have your opinion and I have mine and there is no need to take it further to her level.

"how dare you insult me that way?"

lol! That is all I have to say about that. I think you take these forums a little too seroiusly.

"saying that I would think cocaine is alright is unacceptable"

unacceptable is being a selfish hog and not putting your baby first, instead indulging in the "occasional" alcoholic beverage and promoting it as a "european thing" that is completely okay. Whatever, its your retarded baby, not mine. You deal with the consequences.

(for those of you who take everything way too literally, I am not saying every child comes out retarded/slow/ developmentally delayed, I am saying it is possible and you are only increasing the chances by drinking any amount of alcohol)

Once again your opinion about what comes first. In my book having a glass of wine does not in any way harm a the baby...You have no right to tell me that im not thinking of my child because that your rigid opinion ...Open up your mind .Its actually good for your health. I did state over and over that once in a while its fine and not having a bottle a day! I had one glass in 6 months and my baby is not in any danger nor am I risking his life. I am taking it seriously because if you dont take a discussion seriouly then why discuss it?
