I was wondering to what degree an
ultrasound can determine date of
conception. A woman I recently slept with
has become pregnant, but she slept with
someone else several days after she slept
with me. How many days apart do the two
instances of intercourse have to be in
order to determine paternity from an
ultrasound?

An ultrasound determines the age of a
pregnancy by comparing measurements
against a standard. Given the dimensions
of the entire embryo (whole length) OR the
diameter of the abdomen, the head, and the
length of the fetus' femur (thigh bone)
doctors can estimate the age of the fetus.
Therefore, the determined age of a
pregnancy is only an approximation.
Information about a woman’s last
menstruation date, her cycle’s
regularity and the duration and date of
intercourse are more useful in determining
the date of conception. This data can give
us information about her fertile period
and possibly (but not 100% for sure)
indicate who is the father of the child.
The only secure method for determining
paternity is a DNA-test!
