Freaking Out.

I was at the lake all day today and missed
a phone call from brayden's doctor that
she said was urgent.
Well the thing is, brayden had his thyroid
test done after he was born & it came
back abnormal, so we re did it and they
said it came back normal...Well today the
doctor called and chris answered the
phone, they said it had something to do
with his thyroid test and etc.
I am flipping out. The doctor told me I
should go get it checked out because I
could of passed it on to him & that I
could have to have surgery on it or etc.
I'm so afraid that he'll have to go
through that.
Has anyone ever had this happen before? I
researched it online & it gave me the
symptons in an adult and I have a lot of
the symptoms, but when I searched for the
babies bray had none?
Any info would be appreciated.

The most typical thyroid problems are
hyperthyroidism (graves') and
hypothyroidism (hashimoto's). These are
diagnosed by testing tsh levels initially,
and then free t4 and t3.
A low tsh level indicates hyperthyroid,
and a low indicates hypothyroid.
These are only two conditions of the
thyroid, but they are the most common.
You can't "pass on" something in terms of
disease, but if you mean genetically, it's
possible, but rare in children.
What symptoms do you think you have?
Treating thyroid problems is very simple.
In the case of hypothyroidism, a small
pill a day replaces the t3 or t4 that your
body is not producing.
I could go into more details, but I don't
like making people paranoid without
receiving more information.....

Symptoms of hypothyroidism (an underactive
thyroid)
i have a lot of symptoms from what I put
above which are
fatigue, exhaustion
feeling run down and sluggish
depression
muscle cramps
increased menstrual flow
more frequent periods
all of those I have.
I meant my son could have it because of a
genetic thing. My doctor told me to get
it checked out because his was abnormal
the first time, but when they re did it I
didnt think anything of it because they
said it was normal.
I keep calling the doctor and am getting
mad because they havent called me back and
I just called again and they said they're
at lunch and wont be back until 1:00 I
told the lady "the nurse said it was
urgent so why isn't she calling me back?"

My mom has a thyroid problem cant remember
which one it is.. But I remember her
saying with one you gain weight and the
other you loose weight.. I hope I dont
get a thyroid problem.. My mom just takes
this small pill everyday for the rest or
her life for it.. But be calm and think
the best you can.. Hopefully the nurse
just said something wrong to make it sound
so horrible

Dalicia I don't think you could have an
underactive thyroid because typically it
will cause you to be over weight. The
two people I know who have it both are
obese. My ouma has an underactive
thyroid, and she is extremely skinny.
Same with this other girl I know. Both
can eat as much as physically possible and
not gain a pound. My ouma is like 5'10
and weighs the same she as she did in
highschool, which is like 105 pounds. A
lot of the symptoms you named are also
common symptoms of anemia (which I have)
and which is very common in women.

Just wanted to update you guys..
Well they said bray probably does have it,
when they first gave him a blood test it
was 4 times past the limit. The normal is
20 which is what the doctor likes it to
be, and it was 107 when he got it
tested...We tested him again after that
and he was a 22 which went down a lot but
still isnt what the doctor likes it to
be.
So tomorrow we are going to get his blood
taken and if its not at 20 then she is
going to send us to a specialist which is
in st louis, missouri. About 2 hours
away. And he'll have to be on medication
for the rest of his life, she said if left
untreated it could cause mental
retardation.
I started crying but then thought, look at
all the other kids who have it way worse.
I called my mom and she was telling me how
this 4 year old gives himself shots in his
stomach because hes a diabetic. And it's
like jeez...It sucks but i'm sure he'll be
okay.
Tanya, I am going to the doctor to get my
blood drawn and checked for it, so I guess
it'll be a waiting game until then.

Dalicia I know you don't like me but I do
hope everything is ok. I don't wish a
sick child on anyone. Trey has asthma so
I can kind of understand what it's like to
know you're child will be on meds for the
rest of their life. Is it usually passed
on by one parent? Maybe it's from the
father's side.

Good luck, I hope things work out okay.
It doesn't seem like it would be fair for
you to have even more to deal with.

Is this something he can grow out of?
Does your mom have a thyroid prob too?
Sorry I don't know much about this stuff.
But I saw on a site that it's very
treatable if caught young and usually
doesn't show up till 2-3months after birth
which means they caught it as soon as they
could which is good news. You're strong
girl, you can handle this!!! What kind
of meds is it? I hope it's not some
shot. Poor baby.

nope my mom doesnt have any thyroid
problems, and from what I know it's
something they have to deal with long term
which is why he'll have to be on medicine
for the rest of his life.
Hopefully when they test him it's at like
a 20 or something normal so we wont have
to go to the specialist. My dad said
there are all different kinds, and
whatever will make the number drop lower
(if its high) then thats the medicine
they'll wanna choose.
So basically he'll be put on a whole bunch
of different kinds, and whatever works the
best and whatever has less side affects
for him will be the one he'll be put on.
Its called congenital hypothyroidism,
research it if you'd like. It also says
that it will cause severe constipation
which brayden has had a problem with ever
since he was about 2 months old.
