Abnormal Cell In Pap Smear Result (am a Lupus Patient)
Posted: 06-23-06 18:50pm

Hi all,
my sister passed away 14 years ago when I was just 9 years old. Imagine how depressed my mom was when we lost my sister to lupus. My sister succumb to lupus when she was only 14 yrs old. She was diagnosed with it when she was 9 yrs old. I saw her went thru everything, fighting with it up til her very last breath. She finally passed away due to lung and kidney failure after suffering for 5 years.
Never did I expect myself to be dignosed with it when I was 20. My mom was devastated when she learned about it. I was devastated. I thought that was it, i'm going to die. My whole world came crashing down. I lost the meaning of life. I thought there was nothing to live for. Thank god for all the help from my friends and close families, I survived and am doing very well now.
I'm 22 this year and have lowered my steriod dosage soo much that i'm going off them by the end of this year!! Something I am really looking forward to.
But recently, I went and had a pap smear done, and my gynae said that she noticed some abnormal cells that made me really worried. Although she said it was nothing to worry about. I naturally had my worries.. I had a biopsy and colposcopy done just now and am waiting for the results. Well.. What I am wondering is whether anyone out there with lupus ever had something like that b4? What is gonna happen if its cancer? What is it if it isnt cancer?

I am going through the same thing. I am also a lupus patient, and I have had 2 abnormal paps, and 2 colposcopys. I am going to have to endure a leep procedure in the next month.

I thought you might be interested in these 2 articles. One talks about how abnormal papsmears are more common in those of us with sle. The other talks about how common hpv is. They estimate that 80% of all sexually active women will be exposed to the virus by the time they hit 50. 90% of these women are able to clear there bodies of the virus. Unfortunately, for those of us with lupus, our immune systems do not work as well as most people, and the immune suppressants we take don't help either. Just take courage in the fact that an abnormal pap does not equal cervical cancer. Even if it is cervical cancer, if caught right away, they should be able to get rid of it. Be diligent about your health and keep getting those paps! I wish you the best.

one common misconception is that men can be tested for hpv. They cannot. So your husband could have had every test and still not known he had hpv.

Hpv can cause abnormal cells to grow on the cervix. It takes years to turn into cancer. And usually doesn't ever turn into cancer. Approximately 80% of the sexually active population has high risk hpv (lower risk hpv is what causes warts. You can have both at the same time. High risk hpv can lead to cervical cancer.) and it is a small percentage of those who develop cervical abnormalities.

Rest assured that a 'bad pap smear' does not mean you have cervical cancer. In fact, a pap smear only detects cell changes. That is why they order more tests (colposcopy and biopsy) of the area.

There is a simple procedure to remove the dysplastic cells - lasts less than 5 minutes - and it has a 70% 'cure' rate.

and was your hubby virgin til he got married to you too? Yup hpv is the number one cause for abnormal smears and could have contracted from him. Like the other said it is the most common std. There is no test for men for this std. It only shows in women. But don't worry I have it too and there is nothing to worry about if you keep your pap's in check. If you had biopsy during colposcopy then you might have lession that will have to go away with either cryosurgery or leep. It is no big deal and it seems like you got diagnosed early which is good.

I have lupus, and I had an abnormal pap, and then I had a biopsy done which also came back abnormal, so my gyno wanted to do a leap to just clear everything out even if it wasn't something serious, she just didn't want to do another biopsy and have to wait longer incase it was serious, and after the leap and they had all that tested I was actually fine. Believe me, I was freaking out too, but really, more then likely, everything is fine.

I Took Folic Acid
Posted: 01-31-07 21:41pm

I was diagnosed with lupus when I was 12 and occassionally had abnormal paps that would always end up being normal again... Until recently when I had abnormal cells and had to have a colposcopy. My doctor at the time told me to take folic acid to aid in my body's ability to rid myself of the abnormal cells. I continued taking my lupus meds and my body was able to get back to "normal". I havent had any abnormal paps since. I am also looking into the hpv vaccine. I hope that helps.
Good luck.

Frequency of cancer in lupus
further research is needed to clarify the reasons for the increased risk of cancer. Dr. Ramsey-goldman notes, “the risk of cancer is extremely rare for an individual lupus patient. For example, if the lifetime risk of cancer in the general population is 4%, the risk in sle is 4.6%. Similarly, the risk of non-hodgkin’s lymphoma is much less than 1% even in patients with lupus. However, these findings highlight the need for people with lupus and their physicians to be diligent in having age-appropriate cancer screening tests performed as part of their ongoing care.”

a complete multivitamin mix contains antioxidants, potentially helpful in the treatment of lupus. Ginger helps indirectly to relieve pain by reducing inflammation and by lowering the body's level of natural pain-causing compounds. Flaxseed contains omega - 3 fatty acids which might decrease lupus-induced inflammation and this be important in the treatment of lupus.

Do not take these statements as medical advice. If you think you may be in need of treatment, please contact a healthcare professional.

I have Scleroderma (which is similar to Lupus) and have had abnormal paps for 5 or more years. I have paps done every 6 months but have never progressed any worse. Yes I have been tested for HPV and DID NOT HAVE IT so don't worry....just because you have these abnormal cells does not mean that your husband has HPV. I was told by my dr that it was from the Scleroderma!
