Q: Gaining Too Much Weight!?!

I'm 22 weeks and as of week 20 I gained 20 lbs. My doctor told me that i'd probably gain another 20. He said that he doesn't want me to lose weight, but he wants me to stop gaining so much. I've gained 3 lbs. Since then. I'm scared that my baby will be too big and i'll need a section. I don't eat that bad though. I eat when I feel hungry. I eat lots and lots of fruits every day. I only drink milk or water. I usually will have cheerios with a banana for breakfast, a sandwich and some baked chips for lunch, and whatever I cook or my mom or husband's mom or sister cooks for dinner. We eat out, but not as much as we did before. I eat one sweet thing a day, like ice cream or a candy, but damnit i'm freakin pregnant. Can't I have that? I feel like i'm watching my weight now more than I did before I was pregnant. I don't eat lots of veggies, but I eat so much fruits I would think that it would make up for it. Also, I eat fried foods about 4 times a week. Bottomline is I don't understand why I keep gaining. I know the baby's getting bigger and all that, but I have pregnant friends that go a month without gaining at all. I'm not going to go hungry, I need to feed my baby. I don't know what to do.

I went to see my Dr. Yesterday and he told me I gained 6 lbs in the last month and advised me to slow down. Im 18 weeks and I started at 125 which he states I was underweight and im now at 143 and says due to my height im still in good shape but from this day forward he expects 3 lbs a month not 6.....Im so upset I thought I was doing well!!!

Weight gain is calories in vs. Calories out. Ultimately, the more you gain during pregnancy, the more you have to lose after you give birth.

Fruits are healthy but also contain enormous amounts of sugars. Fried foods are not healthy for you at all. And sweets every day are also not good.

I'm not picking apart your eating choices, i'm letting you know that nutritionally these are empty calories. There is nothing in ice cream that will be of any benefit to you after you factor in the calories and the sugar and fat loads! Candy bars, soda pop, all are full of nothing but junk. Read labels, start informing yourself about what you are eating. Drink fat free milk, or skim instead of whole or 2%.

You can cut out some of the calories you eat by watching what goes into your mouth and moving more. Walking for at least 1/2 hour a day is excellent.

I know it is sad because cravings are so out of control while you are pregnant, but being pregnant does not give anyone a license to eat whatever, whenever they choose. Eat treats sparingly. You'll be amazed at the difference.

I know how you feel, diet is a four letter word. I did great with being pregnant with my son and then I got pregnant with my daughter and we were alwys having pot lucks at work and I think I must have thought that chocolate and sweets was part of the basic food groups, I used to munch on grapes allot thinking that they were okay and I found out that they are fattening. I have never been a great vegetable person when they are cooked but I love salad, salad and baked chicken and fish is practically what I lived on after my daughter was born, sure, I would have a little piece of cake or pie but not much and drank alot of water and really took off the weight plus I joined a gym. With my son, I never felt that hungary I did not have any mornng sickness but I had some with my .Daughter.
Good luck to you as I know it is not easy!

I know that fried foods and sweets are empty calories and that being pregnant doesn't mean that I can eat whatever whenever. I just know people that ate like pigs during their pregnancy and i'm trying my best and I keep gaining. I do drink 1% milk and have replaced my bread and rice and things like that with healthier choices. I don't ever drink soda. I was just venting and trying to see if anyone else went through the same thing.

A lot of us have been there! You are not alone! There is nothing wrong with venting, you are among people that understand! I know that I understand!
The best to you!

oh, I didn't mean to sound high and mighty. Sorry it I did.

When I was pregnant with my son, I gained a lot of weight. There was constantly food in my mouth. Sure, I didn't drink soda pop, but I ate 1/2 a bag of chips at a time! Usually about once per day. Plus I had my fair share of ice cream and cookies also.

I know what works for me (i'm not pregnant right now, btw) is to seriously watch what I eat and write it down. I have discovered a lot of ways to knock out calories that way! Like eating out. I quit that and lost 5 lbs in a month. Just from not eating out. I quit eating processed foods and made from scratch, another 10 lbs. That was without adding in excercise.

We don't really think about what we eat, and if you ask the average person, they will say they eat healthy. When there is an obesity epidemic, how in the world can most people be eating healthy, you know?

Good luck. And don't worry about gaining a few pounds. You can lose them later ;)

My new favorite foods are low-fat cottage cheese and chilled seedless grapes (but not together). I eat them in place of the sugary sweets i've been craving. Substitution might work better for you instead of trying to cut foods out of your diet entirely. Good luck!

I've been craving .Hersheys with .Almonds just about every day for the last four months. My poor husband would get an ear full if he came home from work without bringing one for me. But my face seriously began to break out, so my vanity won over.

It sucks trying to convince your body that it wants a grape when it really wants chocolate. As good as grapes are, they're nothing compared to chocolate. *sigh* but my skin looks great!

Sugar free fudgesicles save my waist! Seriously, those babies are only like 40 calories and taste like more. It doesn't change the fact that I want to eat chocolate fudge cake ~ but i'm the one making the food choices so I don't buy chocolate fudge cake (or i'll eat it all!). I eat a fudgesicle and tell myself that will cure my cravings ;)

it does not always work.

we had chinese tonight and i'll be snacking on the leftover rangoons later!

I've also gained my fair share so far and I don't eat much more or differently than I was before. I go to the doctor on monday so I don't know exactly how much i've gained but at almost 22 weeks it's between 20-25 pounds. I just hate the lecture I get from one of my doctors (luckily I won't be seeing him this time). I'm not too worried about how much I gain though (as long as it's not crazy out of control!), i'll be losing it as soon as the baby is born. I figure you're only pregnant a few times out of your life so why not enjoy it and not worry about gaining weight?

Oh, and I also hate all the weight threads at babycenter. All the women there complain because they've gained 8 pounds or 12 and I just want to slap them.

Remember that milk is a carbohydrate. 2% or not.

I have done pretty well with my weight, but I have gestational diabetes and cannot eat certain things. However, the diet is easier than you'd think: I don't have to cut out carbs completely or anything. It's all about moderation. Like someone else mentioned: substitute things for the sweets and fried foods or carbs.

One thing i've had to do is not eat fruit before noon. That's because of my blood sugars, but it would most likely help with weight gain, too. When you eat cheerios with a banana, you have to remember that you're getting carbs from the cereal and the milk... Then you're getting sugar from the banana. I'm not saying it's horrid or anything, but that stuff adds up before you realize it. It also is important to watch portion sizes.
