I Think I Am Addicted to Pain Medication Posted: 07-18-06 14:38pm
I have had several illness's to allow me
to have rx's legally for pain medication.
However i'm over the illness's and are
still taking the medication on a reg.
Daily basis.
It's effecting my "personality" and
ability to communicate with my friends and
family. I get aggitated with everyone
easier than usual. Are these signs of
abuse?
I want to stop taking them but is it
something I need to do slowly? It's not
like it's been going on for years, just
about 6 months but I still know I need to
stop and do not want to seek
"professional" help for I don't want
anyone to know i'm doing this.

I understand where you are coming from! I
haveto live with chronic pain probably for
the rest of my life, although I have cut
down and accepted the pain if you are on
any opiates, you might think about talking
to your dr and having him to help you. I
am not a dr but I do know what I am
talking about and you are right, it does
take time and I do wish you all of the
best!

I am doing it. It was a hard thing to do.
I flushed all my pain med's in the toliet
tuesday night. I think the hardest day
was wed. I of course had to work and I
had a few good friends watching over me
while I pounded away at the day. I have
gone through the nauseaus phase, the tired
phase (extremely-wed), i'm still not that
hungry but forcing myself to eat and drink
every once in awhile. I am keeping busy
with my puppy as well.
I do have a dilema that might approach me.
Even though I will be "pain med free" I
will eventually be put back in the
hospital for passing a kidney stone that
is in my left kidney but i'll just make
sure they don't send me home with any
rx!
I highly recommend doing this on a weekend
if you are thinking of getting off the
pain med's. Working and doing it is hard
but i'm getting by..

Why don't you talk to your doctor about
switching pain medicine?
If you are on something like
vicodin/percocet/oxycontin, try switching
to a milder narcotic like darvocet or
ultram. They don't have nearly as strong
of side effects and are still very
effective. If you aren't abusing the
medicine purposely then you aren't
addicted. You can be dependant and not
addicted. It's the nature of the
medicine. Why would you go and flush
them? If they work, then take them! If
you don't like the symtoms, try different
medicine. There are other options.
I've been through every pain medicine in
the book before I found one that didn't
have adverse side effects on me and also
relieved most of my pain.
