Fuo (fever of Unknown Origin) Posted: 07-20-06 22:15pm
Help! I am now on my 17th day of
running a fever over 100 degrees. Let
me take you back to the first day of my
fever. On july the 3rd I woke up in the
middle of the night with a 103 temp. I
had muscle and joint pain and could not
get my fever below 101 even if I took
motrin. I was basically bedridden for 3
days like this. Had no other symptons.
But I did discover a bite between my
toes that resembled a fire ant bite but it
was much bigger and had alot of puss.
It felt as if my toe was broken and that
leg hurt mainly the mucles and joints.
I had been in the country mowing grass the
day before, playing basketball and yes
drinking a couple of cold beers while I
played! Anyways, I am recently
uninsured so I was not in a hury to be
seen by a doctor. My fever started to
drop and would go as low as 100 and only
shoot up to 102. By friday I thought I
felt stronger and my fever started to
inmprove. By saturday my high fever was
back. All along I thought I just had a
bad virus and I could just ride it out.
By the 7th day I went to the doctor and
was diagnosed with a vaginal and a bladder
infection. He looked at the bite on my
foot and basivally ignored it. Had some
tests done including std's. Doc gave me
an antibiotic and was sent on my way.
By wed. Day 9 with fever, my temp was
back over 102 and went back to a different
doctor who did a urinary culture, chest
x-ray, and suggested an hiv test. All
test came back negative. He gave me an
additional antibiotic for the bladder
infection. Still ran a fever while
taking the pills and completed them on
monday. On tues the doctor's office
called and once they realized I still had
a fever for now 15 days the wanted to see
me again. I saw an internal medicine
spec. And he order blood work (8
different test) but he did tell me during
my visit that because I look normal, my
glands aren't swollen, and I am not losing
weight that I could have fuo (fever of
unknown origin) especially if my blood
work comes back negative (which it did, no
bacteria in my blood) he told me that
unless I wanted to spend thousands of
dollars on ct scans, which may not show
anything that I just may have to accept
that I have fuo and to keep taking motrin
or advil. He did show some concern about
the bite I had and said that it should
have been look at more closely. But the
nurse that called with my results didn't
mention it. I have now had a fever for
17 days, I am feeling somewhat better and
my fever was normal when I woke up. But
it did come back at 100.4 and I can't
seem to kick it. I am totally exausted
and frustrated! Any advice or suggetions
on how to cope with this?
