Pancreatitis? Hope You Can Help
Posted: 07-23-06 07:43am

Im 26 with arthritis and crohns. For the past 8 months ive been having very severe abdominal pain - have had it in the past too but now its constant. Its between my two ribcages, just below my sternum. When its really bad it goes around my right rib cage and into my back. I need to bend over, hold my breath and press where the pain is to cope with it when its bad. I cant stand up straight for most of the time cos its so sore.

Ive been seeing my crohns doc about this now since november. Ive had 2 endoscopies, and a cat scan (which I dont think went high enough) and all came back fine. My doc now wants to rule out gallstones and pancreatitis by having a barium xray and ultra sound.

Im only 113lbs, lost about 25lbs over the past few months, I barely drink, I dont smoke so im at a loss as to what this could be and the docs are running out of ideas. From what ive read it could be pancreatitis but would appreciate your opinion too
thanks

Pancreatitis is a very serious condition. Ultrasound will give doctors a good idea of what's going on, and if you may have a biliary obstruction however ct is the best modality to detect pancreatitis. The doctor should also test your serum amylase and lipase for pancreatitis. Alcohol abuse is the main cause of chronic pancreatitis, however it can also be due to a biliary obstruction. Are the following symptoms brought on when you eat? Pain in the middle and towards the left, nausea, vomitting, gas, or fatty stools? I suggest you wait for the results of your barium study, and ultrasound. Your doctor should order further bloodwork for now, and maybe a ct scan depending on what is found on ultrasound.

Good luck.

Yeah I get a lot worse pain while and after im eating, just below my sternum and it goes around my right rib to my back. I feel really nauseous and was sick once but I try so hard not to be sick. I did get a blood test last week and have a barium xray this thurs - dont know when the ultrasound will be
doubt I will have another cat scan, tho I dont think the last one went high enough. It looked like it started just at the bottom of my rib cages, just above my belly button, and thats no where near the pain is. Hmmmm..

Thanks for your help!!
