Going For Birth Control. Posted: 07-25-06 13:18pm
Hello. I'm holly and I just scheduled an
appointment for the birth control pill.
I haven't seen an ob-gyn or any sort of
docter like that in my life. What should
I expect when I go for my appointment?
I've read many articles on birth control
but i'm still a little worried seeing as I
am younger. I just want to go about
things smartly. I also don't know if I
will keep the appointment I made, or find
another place. Would anyone recomend a
planned parenthood facility or what sort
of docter? I have a lot of questions and
would just like to talk to someone about
this.
Thank you very much.

The planned parenthood I went to was very
kind; but and ob-gyn could be just as
nice! One of the neat things about pp is
that most of the staff is female, which
can make you feel more comfortable. I
don't know how happy i'd be with a male
doctor looking inside of my vagina ;)
how old are you? Are you sexually active?
If you're over the age of 18 or already
having sex, then they will require you to
get a pap smear, although i've heard there
are ways around that. Still, it's a good
idea to get one. Mine was not painful;
just uncomfortable.
As for the pills themselves, the doctor
will talk to you about the different types
and probably offer you the most common
brands and types first; since they
generally work for everyone. Ortho-lo is
a favorite because it's established, it's
a lower dosage so it's less likely to
cause bad reactions, and many women know
what it is.

I am almost 17. When I made the
appoitment on the phone I was just very
nervous so I didn't ask the questions I
had orginally wanted to ask. My appoint
is for august the 7th, but I just had my
period on june 18th till the 25th. I am
sexually active and my boyfriend and I use
condoms. I think I need to call back to
the docters office and ask more questions,
it's just that sometimes I get people on
the phone that seem not to want to take
time to answer my questions.

Alright, well one thing is that they are
most probably going to give you a
pap-smear; which like I said is not as
scary as everyone makes it out to be! The
doctor I had joked with me, and said "i'm
not going to bother to tell you to relax,
because I know it's impossible." it
doesn't take very long at all :)
they may also give you a pee test for
pregnancy, otherwise they shouldn't give
you any pills until they know. I'm just
guessing, because like I said, I went to
planned parenthood. I bet the procedure
is mostly the same anywhere you go!
You may have to fill out a bunch of forms
while you're waiting, just general
information. It depends on if they have
your medical records or not; but I know at
planned parenthood there was a whole
sexual survey I had to do (which was a
little uncomfortable with my mom there;
since she didn't know I was already having
sex!!). I had to hide my answers like
during an exam!!
You may even get a heated speculum (which
is what they place inside of the vagina to
hold it open so the doctor can see all the
way up inside lol. That's nice, because
then it isn't cold! :p

Will plannned parenthood give you the
birth control pills while you are there,
or do they send them to a pharmacist like
regular doctors do when you're sick? I'm
just very scared, thats what put me off
from going for awhile. I don't have
insurance either seeing as I am 16. My
boyfriend has insurance through his work
but i'm not sure if it would cover this.
Even though I am only 16 I am very mature
for my age, this came along with my
parents getting divorced 3 years ago. I
do " hously" things.

Planned parenthood sells the pills right
inside of their office=)
you would have to be married to be on your
b/f insurance...

If you're a student, then you can probably
get the pills for free, yay!

Many pp's offer stuff to teens (minor
teens) for free! The pp in my city is not
funded well enough to offer free services
=(
