Im hoping someone can help, my 15 yo son
was playing basketball the other day, when
he got home a couple hours later he said
he felt as if his heart was beating out of
his chest when he was playing. I checked
his pulse at rest for the next couple of
hours , it was between 95-110, I called
the doc he sent me to the er, they did a
ekg, chest x-ray and blood work including
some special heart test bloodwork.
Everything was fine, I told them that he
had been on hydrocodone cough syrup for
about a week for bronchitus and had just
finished a 6 day steroids he finished two
days before for his ashma, the er doc said
that he could not do any physical activity
until he goes to get a echo done, ok he's
driving me nuts, he wants to play, does
anyone know if possibly something else
could be wrong that wasn't picked up by
the tests already performed? Thanks

He Might Want to Slow Down a Bit Posted: 01-18-04 17:06pm
A couple things:
sounds like your son was sick for a little
while. After you're sick your physical
condition deteriorates and playing sports
can very easily burden your heart. Also,
hydrocodone slows down your heart rate.
After you stop taking it, your heart may
beat faster, especially after a workout.
Perhaps he might want to slow down a bit
until he's completely back to healthy.
(shrug) it's for a doctor to say if its
serious or not.
Best wishes.
Daniel.

His problem was most likely asthma and
bronchitus related.
The er doc is taking the reserved but
nonetheless sensible path.
It would be better for him to rest and
complete the recommended testing prior to
returning to playing.
