Sex And My New Hip... Posted: 07-30-06 18:47pm
I was just told last week that I do need
my left hip replaced and it will be done
on august 29, 2006. I have been in so
much pain since last september that I was
so pleased to hear that I will be once
again free of pain and hopefully I can
have my life back again. I'm very afraid
of the surgery but I do know that the
outcome is worth any anxiety that I
have.
Never thought about the sex aspect
although I should of because I can't
spread my hips the way I use to. It
finally hit me over the weekend, "what
about ever having sex again"? Well of
course I went to google to see what I
could find and here you were ready to
answer my question, "can I have sex after
a hip replacement"? From reading all of
your answers I guess I can but it might be
a little tricky.
I have learned as my husband and I have
gotten older that sex has become tricky so
i'm assuming that it won't be much
different after the surgery.
Any advice or any web sites that you can
send me to to learn more about what to
expect after my surgery would be greatly
appreciated. I noticed that there are
alot of younger people that have had their
hips replaced so me at age 58 almost 59
doesn't seem so young anymore.
Does anyone know why this happened to us
at this age. I just went on vacation
with my aunt and she is 79 and she could
get around much better than I could. Is
it in our genes, my mother had a hip
replaced and two knees? The doctor said
that blood needs to flow to the cartilage
between our joints and if it doesn't the
cartilage wears away or dies. What would
make the blood not get to my cartilage?
I also feel that my body started going
down hill towards my needing my hip
replaced years ago. I started falling
over for no reason, I couldn't ride a two
wheeler bike anymore because of leg
weakness and had to get a three wheeler,
and many of my joints hurt and my left leg
lost strength in it that I had to pick it
up to get into my van (this happened for
several months while I was still in my
late 40's). Most all of these systems
came and went until last september, they
all came back and never went away. The
doctors took lots of x-rays but as of
january, 2006 they didn't feel that I was
ready for surgery until last weeks x-rays
showed that what little cartilage I had is
now completely gone.
If someone where to ask my opinion I would
say that I should have had a bone density
test years ago when I asked for one and
the doctors said that I didn't need one.
I would have then been put on medicine to
help prevent me losing from calcium or
whatever it is that I lost in order to get
to where I am. I went through menopause
without any problems and then this
happened.
If any of you out there can give me your
opinion I would like to hear it. Does my
story remind any of you of your story.
Also let me know about sex, I know it may
be different but just knowing that it will
be ok for me would be an added bonus.
Also how many of you lost weight before
the surgery, I have been trying to retain
my weight without gaining but I do feel
that if I could lose weight it would help
me, what do any of you think about that?
Thanks, kw

Tips I Have Found... Posted: 08-30-06 11:10am
Well, I am only 25 yet have been unable to
enjoy sex pretty much at all so I am
hoping that no matter how many
“tricky” moves I might have to make
once I get my hip (right) done it will
make me able to do anything!
I know that sex is a very touchy subject
with doctors… don’t ask me why they
don’t like to talk about sex when it is
as natural a part of a carbon based life
form’s biology as the hip is but they
might flat out refuse to talk to you about
it.
From what I have gathered from talking to
others that have already had hip surgery
it isn’t all that complicate. You
can’t bend your hip past a 90’ angle
so no “doggie” style, female on top
may be kinda’ hard depending on your
inate flexibility, and you can’t bend
your legs back to your ears anymore in
missionary. I know that this sounds like
it severely limits available positions but
it isn’t too hard to get around if you
are patient and are willing to throw down
$100.00 on a foam wedge/ramp kit (example
located at: http://www.Extremerestrai
nts.Com/blue-liberator-bedroom-wedgeramp-k
it_1391.Html) I know that this site is
a little odd… and over priced… but it
is the only example of what i’m talking
about that I have on hand. The prices I
have seen go from $50.00 to over $500.00
depending on how complicated a set up you
want to get. With this set up you don’t
have to worry about pillows moving around
under your hips or sliding around on the
sheets. I am trying to find a physical
example to examine, without having to
spend the $$, so that I can make my own
set up for pennies. (i have a sewing
machine, an electric knife, and access to
various types of foam… how hard could it
be? Lol!)
from everything I have been able to find,
as long as you don’t go beyond 90
degrees and have a paitent partner
everything can go smoothly…
also, sideways works best for me because
that leg can be on top and isn’t bent
that much so there is very little pressure
on the joint.
I hope some of this advice helps you out!
Don’t be afrade of the surgery… my
whole life goal is to get sliced open so
that I can actually have a life!
I’m young and keep being told that it
will complicate my “golden years” but
I think I am willing to be in pain when I
am 70+ so that I can actually be able to
enjoy the life in the here and now.
Here is a great yahoo! 360 group I found!
It is called surfacehippy and though it
seems to focus on hip resurfaceing
paitents it is for anyone that has hip
“issues”. Their website is: http://health
.Groups.Yahoo.Com/group/surfacehippy/
and their email is: surfacehippy@
yahoogroups.Com
i have met a lot of very understanding
people and it feels really good to share
our stories!
