For now there are 2 types of HIV: HIV-1
and HIV-2.
HIV-1 has several subtypes (A, B, C, D, E,
F, G, H and O) typically found across
geographic regions. HIV-2 doesn’t have
subtypes and is more common in Western
Africa. Both types are transmitted in the
same manner and are connected with the
same opportunistic infections. New types
of HIV can be detected only via genetic
research.
