Is Epilepsy related to Daughter's difficulty Speaking? Posted: 08-17-06 08:57am
this question is about my daughter. My
daughter has epilepsy, and is 4 years old,
doesn't speak clearly and did not speak
until she was about 3.
The neurologist thinks the seizures are
in the speech area but not sure. The
question is, is this or could this be why
she is not talking like the kids in her
Pre-k class? She mainly babbles but if
you listen hard enough you can understand
some of what she is saying and what could
you suggest be done to help her to talk
clearly.

If the focus for seizure attacks is
located in the “speech area” of the
brain, the attacks will be manifested
with sudden, not-understandable speaking.
You can first request a CT-scan or an MRI
of the brain to identify possible reasons
for epilepsy. You can also check your
daughter’s sense of hearing. Damaged
hearing in small kids makes speaking
difficult. The “speaking area” and
“hearing area” of the brain are
located close together in the temporal
section of the brain.
