Should Son use Medication if Epilepsy is Infrequent? Posted: 08-17-06 09:30am
My son had his first seizure when he was 9
in March of 05. At the time he had an EEG
that showed activity on the right lobe.
We opted not to give him meds. He had
another seizure in 8/06 (a few days ago)
his attacks are grand mal like - he blacks
out, shakes and his eyes role. Last time
he came right out of it and had very
little fuzziness for about 5 minutes.
This time he went into a deep sleep after
the seizure and was asleep for about 5
minutes. When he came to he was confused
and very blurry. Slurred speech and
unsteady. His speech cleared up after the
paramedics gave him oxygen.
1. If I put him on meds - how do I know
if the meds are working if his attacks are
so far apart
2. What are the chances that it would be
another almost 2 years between attacks.
3. What should I ask his Neurologist when
we go (they can not see us for another 2
weeks)

Nobody knows why attacks of epilepsy are
rare in some cases and are common in other
cases. In cases when seizures are rare ,it
is difficult to judge if the medicines are
working or not. If and when seizures
become more common, medicines will be
necessary. You can request another EEG
and CT-scan or MRI of the head for your
son to identify the type of epilepsy he is
experiencing, as well as possible causes.
You must consult a neurologist!
