Non Small Cell Lung Cancer Posted: 08-19-03 12:55pm
My father was diagnosed with lung cancer
in january. They successfully removed
the tumor and right lobe of the lung. As
a follow up in july, my father received
another pet scan. Hot spots came up in
his lymph nodes and lining of his lung.
He went from a stage 1 to a stage 111b
within 6 months.
after speaking with his oncologist, they
recommended chemo, but not radiation
because his lungs are in bad shape. They
will do a combo of taxol and carboplatin.
Please let me know of alternatives since
he will not undergo radiation along with
chemotherapy.
Also, sloan kettering doctors are
questioning some of the hot spots on the
pet scan. 2 of the 6 doctors feel some
of the spots may be scar tissue from
surgery. They want to review his
original cat scan (pre surgical) and
compare it to the new one. Do you know
anything about pet scans and scar tissue?
thank you,
kate

I'm sorry to hear how sick your father is.
I am not a doctor, but I suggest you
ask your oncologist about a lung and heart
transplant if you have insurance or money
to do so.
This is a decision for you , your
father and the doctor to make.

Non-small Cell Lung Cancer Posted: 01-10-04 21:30pm
My husband was diagnosed 6/2002 with
adnocarcenoma stage iiib - he is a 36 yr
non smoker. We have undergone 8 cycles
of carboplatnim/taxol -- he underwent
carbo platnim this past summer 2003 with
radiation therapy, which in our option did
more harm than good. He developed a
right plural effusion again, this time it
has gotten bad. The right lung won't
inflate at the top or the bottom of the
lung. They did surgery on him an
installed a pig-tail cathiter in his right
side to help drain the fluid build up, we
do this at home. It is a new procedure
only out within the past year. His
fluid is drained every other day 550 ml ,
we are faced with the fact that since the
lung won't inflate that we will have to
have the lung removed. We've even been
given an option of an experimental surgery
that is to remove the plura and not the
lung. Then they pack the lung with a
mega dose of chemo to contain the tumor.
As far as petscans, they are great.
They tell all!!!! My husband has scar
tissue built up as well which will show on
the petscan and catscans, this is normal
from what I know. Trust in the doctors,
if you are unsure, always get second
opinions. I feel for you. I am
dealing with this myself. Its an aweful
cancer. If you need support, email me.
Also this type of cancer is know to go to
the adrenal glands and the liver as well
as the brain.
