New Breast Cancer Patient Posted: 08-17-06 13:55pm
Hi everybody! I'm a new member to the
site and I am wondering if anyone has ever
heard of an incident of breast cancer
caused by depo-provera use. I was
recently diagnosed with aggressive cancer
in my left breast and I am totally
shocked! I have had a yearly mammogram
since I was 35 (am now 46). I started a
new job, and (stupidly) let my year date
slip by. So I was actually 11 months
past my due mammogram date. They started
me on chemo immediately to shrink the
tumor (6cm). While I was beating myself
up over skipping my mammogram, the Dr.
Told me that it's such a fast growing
cancer, that it may not have shown on the
x-ray the previous year.
Here's the kicker...There is no evidence
of any kind of cancer in my family
history. If there were, I would not have
let the test go by. I am going crazy
trying to figure out where this all came
from. I quit smoking in 1998, but my Dr.
Said this is caused more by a hormone
problem. Someone told me they thought
there was a connection between breast
cancer and depo.
Anyone hear of this? If so, please
respond. If this is the case, someone
needs to go after the manufacturer of this
drug.
Thanks for your support.

Dear tessarahormonal use can increase the
risk of breast cancer. It doesn’t mean
that your cancer was caused by hormone
use.

Tessara,
I, too, am a breast cancer survivor - 7
years and counting. I have two relatives
with a history of breast cancer - my
grandma on mom's side, and my aunt on
dad's side. And I only found this out
AFTER diagnosis. Yes, I skipped two years
of mammography, and more importantly, was
not religious about self-exams, since I
had lumpy breasts - hard to tell the good
guys from bad guys (well, the lump I felt
stood out like a sore thumb, so that was
no excuse - but hindsight is 2020). Lisy
is right, hormonal use has been implicated
in increased risk, but doesn't mean your
cancer was caused by it. And...80% of the
people who get breast cancer do NOT have a
relative with breast cancer and no family
history.
The younger you are, the more aggressive
the cancer tends to be. You were still
menopausal, right?
What I would do, tessara, is find a good
support group in your area, and look on
the net for some good sites about breast
cancer - y-me; national cancer institute
(NCI), are a couple good ones. Go ahead
and google breast cancer. Just steer
clear of any sites that want to sell you
something...

Hi Sweetie! Me Fairy*Godmother Posted: 08-19-08 19:45pm
Welcome to eHealth! I am in the
reconsturction phase, mastectomy left
breast this past April 26th.Get
this.....last year I was told it was a
"stopped up milk gland" up milk gland...
turned out to be a cancerous growth. A new
and more thorough doctor replaced the one
from last year and I have thanked God for
him for being so persistant. What turned
out from bopisy to lumpectomy, turned into
mastectomy.
The thing about breast cancer is they do
NOT know exactly what causes, there are so
many mutated forms of cells that could be
from a number of things....Growth hormones
added to cows milk, pesticides sprayed on
vegetables and fruit, breathing clorox,
genetics plays a paart, but not for all.
They can isolate and tell the fast rowing
form the slow growing, which is a good
thing....its just an educated guess as to
what caused it..... mine could be from
eating playdough biscuits my daughter made
22 years ago!!!!!!!! Feel free to Pm if
you'd like!
