Bcp & Medication?
Posted: 08-20-06 07:44am

I was wondering if you are able to get medications for anxiety while taking birthcontrol? I'm going to be going to my doctor soon but I don't want to ask her for anxiety medication unless I know you are able to mix the two.

Last time I went to her about my anxiety/depression, she almost took me off the pills and wanted me to just use condoms and have morning after pills with me. I didn't want to do that at all. I rely on birth control pills, even though they've made me a lot more moody.

It's not as though i've suddently gotten anxiety... I can't exactly blame the pills. I've had anxiety ever since I can remember. It's just that now things in my life are changing, work, school, boyfriend problems... And I just want something that will help me stay calm and relax durng the times I panic. I want to be able to function normally while at work... Right now i'm a mess and it's effecting my health and my job.

Does anyone know, or is anyone taking bcp along with depression/anxiety medications? Do you know if it's safe? Do you know if medications lower the effectiveness of birth control?

Thank youu...

Anxiety meds don't effect birth control. I was on meds for anxiety whilst taking the mini pill and the two don't interact with each other.
The meds I tried were diazepam, propranlol and citalopram and they didn't make my bcp's inaffective.

Check with your doctor just to be 100% but my experience is that it's safe

If your birth control pills are making you more moody, you may try changing them. I was on ortho novum for 2 months, and during those 2 months I was a totally different person. I went back to the doctor, and she said they didn't even give that pill out anymore!! I'm on ortho tri cyclin lo now, and haven't been a bit moody at all, and i've been on them for a year. They told me that they had 60 different types of pills that they could keep trying until I wasn't moody anymore- i'm just glad it worked on the first time!!

If nothing works, and you still have mood issues, perhaps an iud may be a good thing to consider..??

That is one of the reasons I cannot use the pill, I suffer from depression and mood disorder.. I have tried over 25 pills, and the ring, just because I wanted to see if 'anyhting would work for me'....

Iud works for me =)

Yeah... I was on alesse before and my doctor switched me to yasmin. I notice a 0-5% change in my mood to be honest with you. I'm just afraid to tell my doctor that because she may take me off bcp's completly... And I don't want that right now.

Boo.... I dunno... We'll see what happens.
Thanks for all your input though, much appriciated.
