Hearing Loss And Musical Instruments Posted: 08-21-06 13:28pm
Hello,
i'm not sure if you will be able to answer
my question, but any bit of advice will
help. I'm a student in grade 12, and
until last september I played the clarinet
in both the school band and the city youth
orchestra. I have meniere's disease and
over the past few years, my hearing has
dropped significantly in my right ear.
My parents almost immediately decided that
I would not be able to play the clarinet
anymore, so as a result I am no longer in
the orchestra or the school band. They
are convinced that my playing the clarinet
so much had a role in my hearing loss -
that it aggravated whatever was causing my
hearing loss to happen.
The problem is, I loved being involved
with the orchestra and playing the
clarinet; music is my life! And I was
getting very good. It really hurt when
they cut me off from it. I know that
they mean well and are only thinking of my
wellbeing, but my question is: *can the
pressure of playing a musical instrument
affect your hearing?* I know that the loud
environment would, but when I played, I
would turn off my hearing aids and still
be able to hear the music, so I hope that
functioned as musicians earphones.
I doubt anyway that the loudness of the
orchestra would have had a big impact on
me, as my hearing was not completely great
even when I started.
If anyone can help me I will be extremely
grateful!
Thank you,
sincerely,
m.

It sounds like it would be something else.
Unless you were constantly exposed to
fairly high sounds almost every day for a
large part of the day, I doubt that was
the cause, since you are only in the 12th
grade. Plus it only affecting one ear.
But i'm no expert.

the problem with meniere's disease is that
it can progressively make your hearing
worse, loud sounds can contribute to added
hearing loss,i know plenty of people that
still play musical instruments in bands
and lead a perfectly normal life with
meniere's disease,there is a fantastic
website dedicated to meniere's sufferers
and you would probably get a lot more
advice and help from other sufferers than
anywhere else on the internet, maybe you
could check it out and see if you can get
any help there,i would add more but I am
short on time and I know these people
would be able to give you better advice
than I can,i was misdiagnosed as having
meniere's disease for 3 years I had all
the symptoms but thankfully my ent now
thinks it's something that can be fixed
with a simple op,so I do understand how
you feel and the guys there helped me out
so much that I still go there and post
maybe just checking it out will help .The
website is meniere's org.
All the best
