During a stomach hernia, doctors will pool the hernia (part of the stomach) back into the abdominal cave and narrow the opening of the hernia. In the case of a hiatus hernia, the opening is not completely closed, as it would be for other hernias because the esophagus normally should pass through the esophageal opening (hiatus oesophagei) on the diaphragm.
