700-900 Calories a Day And Gaining Weight? Posted: 08-24-06 11:14am
This problem may seem really insignificant
on account of my healthy weight, but it's
been a great source of frustration to me
in the past two weeks. At 5'6, I have
maintained a weight of 120 lbs for the
past two years by limiting my net caloric
intake to about 900 calories a day. On
occasion, i'll eat as many as 1000 more
calories than this, but I am careful to
burn off all the excess through exercise.
Otherwise I easily gain weight. Despite
maintenance of this routine, my weight has
hovered around 130 lbs for about two weeks
now. I've even limited my net intake to
700 cals for the past week.
I know i'm not pregnant, and while I
occasionally experience water retention,
it never lasts for two weeks. Nor have I
been consuming any more sodium than usual
(i actually have low blood pressure). I
do have a history of anorexia and
substance abuse (diet pills), but I have
long since recovered. I don't want to cut
back on any more calories, so I am
contemplating using pills for just one or
two days to kickstart my metabolism. I
don't want to risk becoming addicted
again, though. I figure that at 18, I
should be able to consume more than
700-900 cals in order to maintain a low
weight.... What should I do? Is it worth
consulting a doctor or nutritionist? Any
advice would be greatly appreciated....

I am no nutritionist and I am definitely
overweight but I have been reading alot
about weight loss.
Here is what i've learned so far.
Your metabolism may be slowing down bc of
low caloric intake. You need to consume
more calories, preferably in the form of
protein.
You should try eating small, low calorie
meals about 5-7 times a day. This will
increase your metabolism.
Don't starve yourself and only eat 2-3
times, you may consume more than you need
at those sittings. Your body may store
excess as fat.
Don't take my word for it, go to
bodybuilding.Net and look around. They
know alot about weight control strategies,
you could learn for days there.

I think you're metabolism is slowing down
due to years of excessive calorie
restriction. 900/day is too little for an
active 18 year old. I think you'll have
to increase you calorie intake to get your
metabolism going again.

You're Shutting Off Your Metabolism.. Posted: 10-31-06 16:43pm
You're not consuming enough calories a
day... To keep your metabolism up. Try
raising your calorie intake and even doing
a little cardio will upstart your
metabolism. I cant really tell you how
many calories you need but with your bmr
you can calculate it,
try a calorie calculator such as

Hello there
yes you should see a doctor to ensure that
the weight gain is nothing more than your
metabolism slowing down because you are
not eating enough...
Just as everyone else said, you are
probably not eating enough....

5-6 meals a day, while watching what type
of carbs you take in i.e. simple versus
complex and when you take them in is your
problem. Sometimes too few calories
actually doesn't let your metabolism kick
in at all throughout the day. Just a few
pointers off the top of my head. If you
want PM me and we can discuss more.

DPG is pretty accurate in what he/she
stated, though a bit generalized.
I know how the mentality of people today
is, "lower cals = lower body weight". What
also occurs however, is that your body
attempts to conserve as much calories as
it can by decreasing your metabolism
because of the lack of calories you are
giving it. Never forget how efficient our
body is, it was meant to survive, not look
good for the summer time.
Increasing the frequency of your meals
will help increase your metabolism, which
is why DPG stated 5-6 meals a day.
Remember too, that it doesn't mean you
stuff yourself in each of these meals, you
will have to watch what you eat, but just
enough to be satisfied for the next few
hours before your next meal.
By the way, 120 and 130 are both
considered average weight for one of your
height.
How is your lifestyle as well? 18 years
old, college life? Partying, studying,
lack of sleep? To let you know, this is
another thing we often don't know about.
There are 3 ways in which we can expend
energy.
1. Resting metabolic rate (while
sleeping)
2. Physical Activity
3. Thermal effect of food (energy expended
for processing of food and other internal
body energy expenditure)
Which one of the three would you say
probably uses up the most energy? I
imagine most people would say Physical
Activity, but no, you expend the most
energy through your sleep (we are talking
about average amount of sleep, not 30
minute naps and whatnot). So remember you
need to sleep too.

I'd appreciate if you can help me out with
the nutritional department some time DPG,
I'm more knowledgeable in exercise related
and less in the nutrition department.
And I just realized this Original Poster
made this almost 2 years ago. =/ Who
brought it back up from the dead -_-,
chances are, the original poster wouldn't
even read this.
