Menocycline & Bc
Posted: 08-25-06 10:38am

My dermatologist prescribed me menocycline 100mg yesterday for my acne. She told me that it shouldn't decrease the effectiveness of my birth control, but.. Doesn't that sound a little strange because I mean it is an antibiotic after all. So when I picked up the prescription last night, on the bottle it says clearly - may decrease effectiveness of birth control. Some people say to use a back up method for a couple of weeks when first starting an antibiotic like this one.. Some say to use a back up the whole time you are on the antibiotic.

What should I do?

Yes, you must use a back up the whole time you are on birth control and taking an antiobiotic , and for 7 days after stopping the antibiotic.

It is not safe to have unprotected sex while using antibiotics =(

is there nothing else she can give you?

Well I could just use topical stuff .. But that's not enough for me. The only other pills she'd put me on are just other antibiotics.. I can't do accutane due to a history of depression. She would pretty much lose her job if she put a patient with depression in their past on accutane because of that chance of it coming back much worse once off of accutane.

So yeah this really sucks. That b*tch at the derm. Office told me no backup was required but I knew better. I really shouldn't have even wasted my time going because I doubt my skin will respond to this either. Ughh.

Yeah and the other day when I first got the minocycline I took one pill that evening .. When I took my birth control.

I didn't use back up that night. Would that 1 pill that night decrease the effectiveness of the birth control I took that night? My bf hasn't ejaculated inside me since.. Because now I know backup is def. Needed. Should I be worried?

Ha because now I definitely am

It would have taken more than 1 pill to decrease the effectivness... You need to have it fully I n your system, whicxh doesn't happen for a couple of days..

Have you considered an iud? It is nonhormonal, and you could take anything you wabted to while on it.I have this oen =)

Okay , so I will give you my experience....

I have had 2 iud's..One hormonal, and one non hormonal. I have the non hormonal oe now because the hormones in the other one did not agree with my system.

The hormonal one I had nothing beforehand, no medicine at all..So I felt it...

There are two big cramps, not sharp pains, or freaky feelings..Just cramps..
First they measure you, big cramp number one, lasts 5 seconds..Literally!
Then they put it in =) big cramp number two! 5 seconds..You are done..

With my non hromonal iud, I took ibuprofen =) and a vicodin I had laying around ;) I felt nothing, except when she measired me... And that was not too bad at all...

It is worth the cramping..I reccomend planned parenthood on albemarle rd in charlotte nc , just inc ase you want to know where it is..
