Constant Lower Back Pain sapping my Will to Live Posted: 08-28-06 12:13pm
Lower back pain for years

The pain is right above where my
butt-crack ends. Sorry for the crude term
but I don't know the medical one. I have
a small dimple above that area and the
pain is all around the dimple.
The pain is constant, a dull ache and it
gets worse when I have walked or stood for
a long time. Short walks do not bother it.
I really like to hike in the Blue Ridge
mountains but any prolonged walking really
sets it off and I have to bend forward and
stretch the back to make the pain go away.
The pain never leaves that area.
I have seen a pain doctor who did
injections into my SI joint and that
helped for a little while but it never
went completely away. My chiropractor says
the culprit is my psoas muscle, that it's
chronically short and that it is pulling
my lower back into lordosis. I do have
lordosis, to the point where, if I lay
down, you can pass your hand under my
lower back without touching my skin.
I am overweight and am trying everything I
can think of to lose weight because I am
sure that the excess weight makes matters
worse. Any sort of exercise using my legs
for longer than a few minutes makes the
pain flare up.
I can't see an end to the pain, other than
to be high on narcotic pain killers or
muscle relaxants. The constant battle with
pain is sapping my will to live because it
is just not worth it to be in pain all the
time and I'm trying to hard to lose weight
but can't exercise and can't starve myself
either. I tried pilates last week and got
dizzy within 3 second of starting. It is
a vicious cycle with no end in sight.
Thank you for any insight you might have
into what is causing this pain.

Painkillers can only temporally relieve
local pain do not cure any disease or
condition. In fact, you don’t even have
a precise diagnosis. It would be helpful
to precisely identify the cause of your
current condition. It could be
spondylosis, but I recommend you visit an
orthopedist for diagnostic examinations.
An X-ray image of the spine and pelvis
will be necessary.
