Blood Test? Posted: 08-29-06 14:52pm
At my last doctors appointment [10wks] my
doctor was telling me about a certain
optional blood test that every pregnant
woman is given the option to have done..
It tests for blood abnormalities.. But .I
cannot for the life of me remember what
it's called! She told me to tell her at
my 14wk appointment whether .I want it
done or not. But .I'd like to read up
about it a little bit before .I decide.
But .I can't remember what she said it
was! Lol

like downs and all.I'm not sure how they
do it.Do you want the test done?

Was it the triple screening?
I had mine done around that time.
It tests for spina bifida, downs syndrome,
and one other...But I can't remember.

It may have been the triple screening..
Lol, sometimes, its so hard to understand
my doctor,
because she's from .India, &has a very
thick accent.
But she said that it's a bloodtest that
tests for blood
abnormalities, &if they find anything
abnormal,
they would do an amniocentisis..
[which scares the piss out of me, lol].
Of course it would probably be smart to
have the test done.
Just in case.
I didnt get that done.
My doc said he only recommends it to
people that have those diseases running in
the family.
Also, the amniocentisis scared me too, bc
that is risking a m/c.

Yeah, .I may not do it, because .I'm young
&very healthy.
Plus no really weird diseases run in our
family at all.
So .I think .I'm good.
Has anyone here actually had an
amniocentisis?

I had the test done, but only because I
wanted to know if something was wrong. It
gives you an opportunity to come to terms
in case, rather than being surprised by it
when the baby's born. But an abnormal
result doesn't mean your baby has anything
wrong, so it's a two way street, really.
I wouldn't risk an amnio personally,
because the results wouldn't affect my
decision as far as keeping the baby, and
the procedure carries risks. Totally up
to you, babe. Keep in mind: they take
quite a few vials of blood! But I would
think it'd be better to know, right?
*hugs*
I opted to have it done with both boys.
Results for brian were 1 in 10,000, and
the results with jordan were mistakenly 1
in 116!!! It freaked me out! Even though
it was less than 1% chance, I insisted on
an amnio. My doctor was so baffled by my
results that he re-checked all the info
and realized the lab had made a big boo
boo. They calculated it by a wrong lmp.
I will have it done this time around.

Me and my best friend both were given the
test and neither of us have anything
abnormal that runs in our family.
Problem is...
Kellys qualitative blood screen (which is
what the test is called that I think ur
talkin about) came back with a 1:360
chance for her baby to have .Downs...
Then her doctor looked at a previous
sonogram and saw a bowel obstruction that
somehow signifies down syndrome in some
babies, and that took her chances down to
1:90. Shes not too happy. The doctor
said she should get an amneocentesis but
whats the point?? I mean shes keeping the
baby regardless so why find out now and
get depressed and start blaming herself?
Messed up thing is...
The pills shes on for her seizures,
.Topamax, is known to cause .Downs in
babies. She knew that before she got
pregnant but took the chances anyway.
Seems sorta selfish to me.

Kristina its called the amniocentisis and
I think it's done around 16 weeks. I was
given the option to have it done but my ob
said the risk was 1 in 300 have a
miscarriage from it, and he didnt think it
was necessary because we have no downs in
our families.
They stick a needle in and take some of
the amniotic fluid surrounding the baby.
The other thing I went for was the nuchal
translucency test which gives the same
results (just not as accurate) by an
ultrasound and they measure the back of
the babies neck - there's a bit of fluid
there they measure.
My neighbour had the needle only becuase
the previous pregnancy she had downs and
half a heart and a few other problems and
the docs said it wouldnt survive at all -
so this one she definatley wanted to know
- and I guess the positive is you can find
out the sex earlier!
