How can I prevent infections after risky Sexual Behavior? Posted: 08-31-06 13:52pm
Doctor,
i was recently in asia and slept with a
girl that I met from a bar. I am really
worried that I have contracted something.
We had kissed and she had performed oral
sex on me without protection. We also had
intercourse and I had protection. However,
I was really paranoid the next day and
went to a doctor ini asia. He took my
blood sample for a test but told me that
it would be about 7 days before the
results would come. I flew back to the
united states the next day and went to
another std doctor (this was about 4 days
after sexual intercourse). I did not have
any symptoms yet and no tests were done on
me from this doctor. I noticed a minor cut
on my penis and informed him about it. He
told me that it was probably a bacterial
infection and gave me levaquin (500 mg, 7
pills... Im currently on my last two) and
injected me with bicillin la (2,400,000
units) for prevention of chlymadia,
gonorhea and syphillis. Is this the right
procedure? He told me to rest assure and
that these diseases would not reoccur,
that they would be eliminated... Is this
true? I am really worried for other viral
dieseases as well. I am scheduled to
return two months from now and have a
herpes test, and then another hiv test in
the 3rd month. The doctor in asia emailed
me the results and they were negative
concerning hiv and vdlr. However I know
that these results are probably inaccurate
because it was done only after one day of
sexual intercourse.
My main question is what I should do now?
What other precautions can I take or am I
just waiting, if any, as the virus
incubates into my body? Should I go to
another std clinic and get tested again?
Please help.. I am really worried and
scared.
According to your description (unprotected
oral sex), you participated in very risky
sexual behavior. The risk is greater if
your sexual partner had ragades in her
mouth or you had ragades on your penis.
The preventive antibiotics that you took
are generally OK. Bicillin (penicillin)
will protect you from syphilis and
gonorrhea. Levaquin (a type of
fluoroquinolone) acts on Chlamydia but
according to my data, tetracycline or
macrolides are usually used for
treating/preventing Chlamydia infection.
For viral infections, unfortunately, there
is no efficient treatment or prevention.
You can try preventing a HSV-infection by
using acyclovir. You can prevent the
B-hepatitis virus (HBV) only if you were
previously immunized with vaccine. There
is no way you can prevent Hepatitis-C
virus (HCV) infection. You can try
preventing HIV/AIDS infection by using
anti-retrovirus therapy (ZDV, AZT). For
all these preventive treatments you MUST
consult an infectologist, first. You will
also HAVE to do HIV-testing 6 weeks, 12
weeks and 6 months after the risky
exposure.
