Q: Symptoms of pregnancy Coincide with the Ring
asked by: DoctorQuestion on September 2nd, 2006
I have just recently stopped the patch due to the horrible marks it was leaving on my body. The week i took it off would have been the incoming second week of the cycle, I got my period again. 3 days after removing the patch and getting my period again, I saw my doctor for an alternative. She gave me the ring. As soon as my period ended, I put in the ring, which i love since you don't even know it's there. I had sex 2 days after the first day of putting it in. It did fall out, but i placed it back in as the instructions stated.
Now, 2 weeks later, I'm always hot and sweating when the weather is cold (i live in san francisco near daly city where it's almost always foggy), my back is aching a lot of the time, and my hips have been feeling sore. I have not been feeling nauseous as of yet, or bloating, but i've been very lathargic lately. I seem to always be feeling the need to sleep.
I can't determine what my symptoms are reflecting, but i'm worried it might be a pregnancy.
Please help me determine my symptoms and why i've been having them since I started the ring?

According to the symptoms you describe (hot feeling, sweating, back pain, sore hips, lethargy...) it doesn’t seem that you are pregnant. The first symptom of pregnancy is a lack of menstruation. Your last period was 2-3 weeks ago and it is too early to predict if you are pregnant or not. You can take a home pregnancy test after several more days to confirm if you are pregnant, or not. You might be experiencing some of the side effects from hormonal contraception (lethargy) but sore hips and back pain are definitely not due to either early pregnancy or hormonal contraception. You may try some painkillers to temporarily relieve the discomfort. Finally, you can consult your gynecologist about the inconveniences you experience with the ring.
